Doing the Coro loop today, getting back towards Thames, I decide to cut across to have a swim at whangamata..... Turns out its a 25km gravel road. Accidental adventure riding was a bit tense on th Z at times, I made it to the coroglen tavern. Time for a beer before I head on.

Ha, did the same thing thinking I could stay the night at Lake Waikaremoana as 1/2 of it is gravel & 1/2 sealed it seemed from the sign.

I did the calculations & I assumed it would be sealed on my end to the lake & gravel from the other, so I'd go stay the night at the campground & come back same way in the morning. Boy was I wrong & it was nasty gravel & my poxy ol' RF did not like it (despite having done a lot of dirt riding at the time).

Ended up giving up & having to stay in Wairoa. That was a mistake too, wot a shit 'ole.

i can sympathise with you there, i went in to waikaremoana on my rf too, loaded with gear including a dozen beers in the tank bag...and i normaly
like riding gravel, even on a road bike but that was a hair raising ride, it was near storm conditions leaving a road surface that resembled inch deep wet concrete...to top it off i had told a guy i was with who was riding a katana 1100 that i like riding gravel...of course he and his 19" front wheeler left me for dust

I used to live a few mins away from wairoa.... Some of the stories we heard... Wouldn't stay there if I could avoid it.

I had a whoopsy on the way back. Came around a left hander, not too fast (there was a ute in front of me a bit). I didn't see a bump or pothole or anything (must of missed something) and the bike got airbourne my left foot came off the peg and when I put my foot back on, the footpeg hit the ground scraped my boot and folded the peg up. I just relaxed my arms and held the throttle constant and the bike jumped back upright. The campervan in the oncoming lane gave me a thumbs up as I rode past haha.

So that was my scary moment. I'd rather the 45 minutes gravel road again haha

That IS an interesting road. Not really the greatest of short cuts on a road bike.

good thing I wasn't racing and was just going for a ride under the legal limit. If I was racing and giving it 100% around that corner I would have most likely crashed.

You probably could have had another beer, or two if you had a feed. What does it matter so long as it's legal, right?

Did the same way back in 1988 on my BMW but it handled gravel fairly well

Same trip as above, looked on the map thinking i'd go that way, heading out and sign says something like "unsealed road 100 km" did it anyway, nice ride up through there
probably did a few extra km as part way through I went down the wrong road and had to turn back

You're right about Wairoa though I stayed long enough to put gas in the bike and carry on, really didn't like the feel of the place

yeah I would have far better done the road on my old Katana with the skinny rear tyre which makes all the diff, but my old GS550 was better again with less weight & more upright position & not clipons. My 1050 Tiger has upright posi but still the wide 17" road tyres so heaps better than RF but not flash.

I locked the bike to a pole outside my cabin & was relieved to find it still there in the morning. The trip into town to get a beer & some food quickly became some food & get back to the cabin.
