Visiting NZ for 3 weeks in Feb. I need a bike

Hi guys and gals of NZ biking!!!

My name is Tom and I hail from Ireland. I am coming to Auckland on 6th Feb for a 3 week tour, heading south to finish in CC.

I am travelling on a pretty tight budget, intend to do the camping / hostel thing, and renting a bike is really not an option for me.

    So I think my options are as follows;
    1. Make a 'buy back' arrangement with a dealer. Might be difficult as I am finishing in a different location to where I start.
    2. Buy a bike on arrival and try to sell it on before I leave.
    3. Do a bike swap with a local, ie. I get the use of a locals bike for me trip and if that person ever decides to visit Ireland, then I give them the use of my bike for the duration.
    4. I make an 'arrangement' with a local for the use of a bike in return for a reasonable 'reward'

I'm interested in something like a DR/ KLR 650, or Transalp 600/ 650, or even DRZ 400 type of machine, if that was all I could find. Anything in this kind of range really.

Would really appreciate if anyone out there could help with any of these options, or offer any advice or other ideas that might solve this for me.
I will already have done a 4 week trip around South America before reaching NZ, and heading to Oz afterwards. This is that great, once in a lifetime trip we all dream about and I'm lucky to have gotten the chance.

BTW, happy new year to all you guys out there. Hope 2014 brings you great biking and a few 'dream come true' moments!!

    Thanks for any help

    Tom

Thanks carver for the offer mate but it's not really what I'm lookin for! Something lighter and smaller as per description, I wont have much gear and wanna head into the hills a bit.

But I will keep an eye on your site, hadn't seen it already. If you come across something closer to what I need please don't hesitate to contact. I won't be arriving Auckland until Feb 6/7. Just about to start 5 weeks around south America

    Thanks for the reply dude!!

You could Google up some dealers and set something up with them.

Hey Welcome to NZ in advance and wishing a happy new year too. Have a look at the site below:

    http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes

Its the ebay equivalent in NZ and you can find 90% of bike listed for sale on this site.

Most of them will come registered and warranted so you can simply buy one and sell if afterwards with no sweat. I also agree as Akzle- You can try selling it back by the end of your 2 weeks trip or have one of us do that for you after you're gone.

    Hope that helps mate.

    Hey!
This is my first post on Kiwibiker... found your thread and keen to know how you go. I've been looking at hire prices and I can't quite stomach $3000+ for a months hire... I'd like to do 6 weeks combined motorcycle/mountain climbing/hiking trip next summer (2014/2015).... So keen to know how you go on Trade Me! Good luck with your trip - your SA adventure sounds fantastic.
    Cheers
    Nicola

You can't really go wrong in NZ man. Just make sure you take the time to enjoy what you are doing/seeing rather than worrying about getting through a whole list of 'to-do's'.

In saying that, down south anywhere around Abel Tasman National Park or Milford Sounds is worth a trip while you're here. Bonus if you can do both

Did you end up with a bike yet? Flick me a message on your way through Picton and I'll see if I have time to head out for a blat with ya.

    Hi Nicola

Not quite sorted yet but almost there. Finding a bike ands kind a deal is not really too hard. Arranging payment and dealing with paperwork could be tricky tho. Will write about how it works out. I think one good idea tho is to budget for a fairly good bike, easier to sell on at the end. Buy something cheap and tatty and you could be stuck with it.
    Where are ya comin from?

Looking forward to hearing how you go. I'm from Australia so the paperwork situation could potentially be easier for me (but also maybe not).
Yeah it's a trade-off isn't it... buying vs renting. Renting would cost upwards of $4k. You could get a decent bike for that and then re-sell but there could be a lot of extra expenses with insurance, registration etc etc.

I'd say you'd still be better off than renting though. If you're up for lending your bike out when I'm in Melbourne sometime I'd probably be able to hook you up, but I don't own anything flash

Try to find a bike with rego and WOF still on it. most private sellers seem to sell with a few months of each left. Dealers seem to sell without 'on road costs' which is an added cost after purchase. Change of ownership is only 9 dollars. Insurance i havent checked yet, but hopefully short term 3rd party wont be too expensive.
