Riding on the coat tails of Ryans' and others hard work...?
Hope not, and I am sure it will be a good event....not just a money spinner for the organisers..
Whatever the terrain and the weather, I am sure it will be fun for all......Veterans and the newbies alike.

Anyway he went on to say that you will need Garmin Basecamp downloaded on your computer for the maps to be installed...You can get this free from Garmin's website

He said the GPS Route will be available to download the week before the event... a little close to the event ...if you ask me ..but, who's asking

    fyi.....

Yup, a bit sooner woulda been better, especially for us GPS noobs. Oh well if its the same track as the last few years then I think I know the way anyway.
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........

I've got that in my "mapsource" so all good , only thing is surgeon wasn't too impressed with me signing up so may have to trailer down and do a "highlights" option

Telling people they need new software and talking about new map sets instead of just loading routes... that's going to cause grief for some of the non tech savvy.
I await with interest. Might need to bring a laptop to sort me mates just in case. Loading map sets on the older Garmins can be quite time consuming through Basecamp or mapsource especially if you have other mapsets that you want to keep as well where the Garmin Map60 for example will need the whole lot re selected and compiled to upload together but the Garmin Map62s can add maps individually without the need to start over. There could of course just be some terminology being miss used there meaning no real issue at all.

Actually quite glad to hear that, had me thinking it wasn't looking good taking so long to fill the 150 spots compared to last round.

Not expecting a fail: I just couldn't resist the pun.

Got an email this morning from Epic saying GPS files out "over the next week". There was also an entry list (which surprised me) and ride info. Spark guards and a fire extinguisher are required for entry. Is this new?

Think I bought mt fire ex from an auto place...just a little one like a flt spray can type thing and a piece of mesh wire over the exhaust outlet might do as a spark arrester. ...if you have a straight thru exhaust tho...

I'm thinking about giving that Glimpse tracking thing a go on my 'cheap as' and 'only slightly smart' Android phone for the duration of the Dusty B.
Sounds quite cool, seen it in action on Eddies ADV site.... www.adventureridingnz.co.nz/rider-tracking/glympse
I know it only works when in cell reception but seems to do a quick update when back in range after a no signal area.
There are all sorts of places we will pass through on the DB where things will get an occasional update.
Be a bit of a laugh and somewhat interesting if several of us log on to be able to see a spread of riders over the course of the event.
It uses phone data and gps turned on to do it's thing but is not supposed to be tooo data hungry.

Edit... installed on phone, had a play, I like it.

I'd give it a tickle, but my "ancient" (3 years old) HTC will trash the battery pretty quickly running in areas without a signal by frantically trying to find one. And I can't be arsed putting it in and out of flight mode around every town!

I've used Glympse when overseas for the entertainment of family back home. Great product but is a real battery hog if using it over a period of hours. Be fine if you can power your phone for the duration of course.
