Hi all
After a recent whoopsy on my prized GSXR I'm considering fulfilling my passion for a VFR400. Just wondering if anyone here can tell me how hard it is (if it is at all) to get a decent tyre for the 18" wheel? From forum browsing seems to be a point made by a few people but I don't know if its valid or not.
I've wanted one since I first laid eyes on one years back, even though I know I'm dropping in power significantly I feel this is something I need to do!
Thanks in advance for your feed back VFR gurus
Not hard, at least up here in Auckland, just a limited choice. If you like soft track focused tyres you are more than covered (2-3 options), and apparently shinkos aren't all that bad in the tyre they do.

I use Shinko 006 podiums. Good for commuting and haven't had any issue in the wet. Have done two trackdays on them and they have been ok.
Dunlop do a set of soft grippy tyres (alpha 12s?)
and you could possibly order a set of bridgestone from the UK however no one has tried yet.
I run the dunlop a-12 on mine.

Alrighty, over revved mine and it threw a valve shim out. I read earlier that someone had a box of nc30 engine parts but cant find it now. Anyone know who it was? I could be after a head / head parts.
That was probably me... I've got a bunch of NC30 engine parts as well as other bits and bobs. $80 for a complete head including cams, cam cover and intermediate gears.
Here is some video from the track day on Waitangi Day. These are the last two sessions of the day so they are quite slow. Hit reserve in first session so missed about 5 minutes of track time. This was all novice group.
So I bought it! 1988 VFR400. Rode it from Nelson to Christchurch, cracking bike! Handling is fabulous!
Paid $3100 for it which I think with all the spare parts and the general condition of the bike was a fair price. Any advice for a n00b VFR owner, things to check etc?
Only issue so far (which was bloody scary) was a seized piston on the front right caliper, try riding at slow speed like that! Cleared a blockage in the lines when I got home so fingers crossed should be ok, probably will get some braided lines and rebuild the calipers anyways at some stage soon.
Gosh darn it! The things you should check when buying a 2nd hand bike n totally forget to do. I will write a check list next time so that I can go over the lot! Unfortunately in life lessons are often learned the hard way...
So, despite my thinking that the bike handles well turns out it could handle a lot better! Front forks are not moving freely, I found this out after I'd stripped off the clothes to replace a speedo bulb.
Anyone got some NC24 forks kicking around that are in good nick? If not can you suggest a good place to get them rebuilt? I have the money but am now wishing I'd given the guy a little less for the bike
Other options would be to swap the front end entirely so that I might have a 17 on the front, though from what I am reading it isn't the easiest process and may not be worth it.
Cheers in advance for your help.
With hot grips and shiz? Think it is the one I'm thinking of but I just got the colours around the wrong way in my mind. He wanted 4g for it originally aye? All things considered it could be worse (regarding the forks and brakes). At least you'll know exactly where they are at when you get it all sorted.
Yup I talked him down from $3500 to $3100, thought it was a fair price. I think I should be able to get the bike up to 100% for about 1k, so yeah, all things considered could be a lot worse!
Just a hell of a shock looking at replacing a bulb and noticing rust on the stanchion, there is something to be said about USD forks, they don't hide! Haha. Still my fault for not doing what is the most simple of tests![]()
