Anyone know if there's a distinction between passing on the left within the same lane and passing to the left of the fog line? When traffic is stopped of course.

Can you clarify what you actually did? If I read it right, sounds like you were filtering through stopped traffic at the lights on the left side of the lane then merged into the lane when you saw vehicles further up started moving.
So long as you weren't obstructing anyone else in another lane I don't see why that's illegal or dodgy and I do that all the time. I've done it in front of cop cars without issue.
Now if you had continued filtering while traffic started moving and you were on the left then that would've been illegal.
The whole left side/right side thing is focused on quite a lot while discussing filtering/splitting but I honestly just ride wherever there's room – feels safer. It's almost impossible to filter/split on the right side of a lane without coming close to crossing over the lane. I think it really comes down to the speed at which you do it, in my opinion.
Was it a Kornies or Wheatbix packet you got your license out of ... ???
You ARE allowed to cross the centerline to overtake another vehicle. As long as you have 100 meters of clear visibility (read clear road) ahead throughout the maneuver ..
Overtaking on the left (and in the same lane) is illegal.
As for the "When traffic is stationary" bit ... legal and safe ... ?? is not always the same thing.
You may be ticked for an "Unsafe" maneuver by plod should a complaint be made. (or said plod observed it and deemed it so)

There are udoubtedly large numbers of people driving around who are not psychologically suited to being behind the wheel. There is sadly no psychometric component to the testing regime.
Some people will fly into a rage if you hold them up for a few seconds, or if you appear to have gained some advantage not available to them.
On the other hand motorcyclists are supposed to keep a clear space around themselves. If you are undertaking, filtering, or doing anything else that removes the clear space, you need to be ultra cautious. And you should resist the testosterone rushes.![]()

If its not moving then its an obstacle to your rightful passage you should have told the bitch she was lucky you didnt simply ride over her.If its not moving how could it possibly be illegal to pass it anyway you want.
Be the person your dog thinks you are...
I try to pass on the right. Problem is if you pass of the left, you can sometimes end up a bit stuck. Most people don't know what mirrors are or how to use them, so they don't see you.. Funny they get so shitty when the get tapped. Or punched off.

Haven't ridden my scooter quite like that. Love how its only $5 to fill it and $150 a year for rego. What wof? Love my bike just as much.
That looks awesomely insane. The irony of getting killed on a scooter instead of my bike though...

There is a lot of into in the wiki about it as well.

The who is right and who is wrong aspect doesn't matter.
What's more important is how you ride -> road craft.
