We have only just seen positive movement to upgrade systems and capabilities aboard the two frigates, but I bet some Lunatic Fringe party members will want that cancelled so they can fund more "organic, hemp-based sandals for fur seals" campaign.

I'm no socialist pacifist but really come on, Australia is plenty capable of defending itself in the short term and heavy backup from USA wouldn't be far away.
And if anyone invades Australia it would have to be a major player which means WW3 and game over planet earth anyway...
You totally missed my point about us effectively freeloading off the Aussies for our regional defence, and not doing our share

I didn't miss it, its not even a valid point. We're practically little above third world status economically, it makes no sense to cripple our economy just to keep up with the Jones across the ditch.
We already commit our SAS to more highly dangerous missions than we need too so to say our nation is like Uncle Buck living in the backyard sleepout is silly.
Not to mention our part in Five eyes and also practically being a defacto early warning station for Australia's eastern seaboard.
Right not we kill far more of ourselves through bad driving and bad eating habits. it would be nice to have some sexy F-18's afterburning across the sky but we'll save more lives with money spent on better healthcare, education and fixing roads.

That same base argument was doubtless in vogue right up to 07/12/1941. What we have wasted on treaty settlements would have been better spent in those important areas ( health , education )and retiring debt. In terms of the health budget it should be strictly user pays for those who have self inflicted their health issues from smoking, drugs and drink driving etc.

In the end event from our collective voting we will get the Government we deserve. If we collectively vote on populist pretence and get a motley and ultimately incohesive collection of the left then we will deserve it. When the economy massively goes tits up because of same then we will deserve the consequences of that choice.

A website address from North Korea would be a more preferable demographic disposition for that moron

Say the BroCom party got a seat, I'm guessing JK would not want them to form a Govt ......
Unless of course that gave labour/Greens a chance to do it..... combinations are endless.
I can see the yoof voting for them....maybe backed up by a like Facebook campaign.
DeMyer's Laws - an argument that consists primarily of rambling quotes isn't worth bothering with.

When one expresses opposition to something like the "Dot.Com/Mana/communist" trilogy the natural asumption for the average Kiwi is that one supports status quo!

For me nothing could be further from the truth!

It is the fact that current government is simply the best choice (IMO) of anything that is currently realistically on offer!

I.E. The best of a bad bunch!

There is a lot of water to go under the bridge before the latest trilogy offereing becomes a serious stable option for any control of the treasury benches!

They will probably stir the emotions of the disenchanted and disinfranchised voters enough to maybe cause even a bit of an upset but then their star will faid.

They may well be able to use the new broom and media attention to good early effect but the diversity of their alliance will IMHO do more to eventually undermine it!

My prediction is that after an initial flurry of enthusiasm that they will self destruct!
