so you dont necessarily agree with cycle lanes?

In Wgtn they seem to appear and disappear like John Key's memory.......

There is one stretch along Old Hutt Road where you cross a cycle lane any time you enter or leave the premises of one of the many businesses along there. Cyclists always seem upset when you do that, cross over the lane I mean.

My wife is Dutch, as a kid she rode her pushbike and then her scooter on basically a separate road with its own signals, crossings etc. I would have thought with the rebuild in ChCh now would be the perfect time to try roading like that out?

I have used the hard shoulder at times to pass stationary traffic. I avoid it now and filter up the middle. I would find it hard to say I thought it was ok when I there is clearly doubt!

Why is everyone on here arguing against common sence road positioning?
...ride down the left and you are gonna have wee smidsy when someone pulls over or turns, that simple!

That kid learnt the hard way...you lot wanna risk a fine and the ability to walk...go ahead, make rastuscat eat more donuts while doing the paper work...but don't cry when your own stupid chocie in road positioning gets ya crippled or worse!

    cycle lane = cycles
BUT...in case ya didnt know, you CAN legally use them....for 50mtrs if turing thorugh the cycle lane

Ride safe KBers...or Rastustcat may get fat from all the donuts & paper work

Been on both sides of that equation except for the queer pack riding thing holding up traffic on purpose. Your attitude is the reason why motorists don't give a $%$^ and pass close.
In the truck I'd always give a short friendly blip (not a blast) of the horn approaching cyclists on state highways just to see how aware they are.
About 90% would look over their shoulder and move left a little where possible. The other 10% adopt small penis syndrome and ride in centre of lane or don't move etc. One guy even pulled out and gave me the finger, often wonder if he was same guy run over and killed on that road a few weeks later...
I hate to get into this whole pigeon hole of road users thing but all sides have got a long way to go before one is better or worse than the other.

one of my mates was clipped by a cunt towing a caravan because the cunt would not pull over. It tipped him off the Summit road and down a bank. He was lucky he only had a broken collarbone, cuts and bruises. If I know you have seen me and I am on my bike I WILL pull out to the centre of the lane so you have to slow the fuck down.

You might recall that churchur had a few wee earth tremors recently? a consequence of that is carnage on the roads and repairs and road cones for miles. I ride through those in the middle of the lane because getting forced into a hole in the ground, or a gutter or under your trucks wheels is not my idea of a good time.

I did giggle at the "hate to get into this whole pigeon hole" when all your contribution does is exactly that.

I only do it because in my experience it is true. you are not paranoid if they actually are trying to kill you.

    Yeah Rite

I believe marked cycle lanes are an aberration and waste of tax money
I believe compulsory helmets are dictatorial and reduce cycle usage.
We have a cycle lane here between Waipawa and Waipukurau, been there for years, cost millions. Yet I have never seen a cyclist on it ever. Not once Not ever.
I cannot walk the 1.5 kilometre distance to get my groceries without meeting a police car on the way. Sometimes its three off them.
16 police cars to chase down a motorist on Aucklands motorway
No. 4 Son pulled up twice in succession in two days by the same cop.
And yet we are to believe this is policing for our benefit and not absolute bloody rorting gauging grazing corrupt revenue gathering.

The most fun I've ever had in a bus was being swung about while the driver drover hammer down trying to get us to the last train of the night. The bus was damn near sideways around some corners.

I do it because it degrades the relationship between cyclists (of which I'm one) and other road users.

When I'm talking to motorcyclists they bitch about cyclists, and when I'm talking to cyclists they bitch about motorcyclists using cycle lanes.

Maybe I'm just a pissing post for people to bitch at.
So it's a 'cycle' lane..... he was on a motorised CYCLE.....
I havent bothered to read the 'law/statute'.. as I am sure you will have had to, I guess that'd be a box of donuts to provide mental 'lubrication' reading the lawyerspeak twaddle they use. And probably there is some passage buried in it defining exactly what a 'cycle' is.....

Now about this 'disproportionate' fine for a cyclist running a red?? Using THAT logic, the fine is also disproportionate for a motorcycle, after all, if a 'cycle' is only 20-25% of the width of a car? We (Motorcycle) are only about 1/3 the size.....

    Just sayin....

    more donuts to Ya!!

You're a cop - sorry, it does go with the territory ... you have my sympathy, but you chose the job ...

And Yeah - I did know it was illegal to use the cycle lanes unless you are in a cycle of the push bike type ... it's also dumb to ride that close to the curb or parked cars - if anything happens there is bugger all time to react ... kids running out, people stepping out, people opening car doors ... on a push bike the speed is not there, even if the impact is ... on a motorbike you add speed and weight to the equation ..

The consequence of running as red light on a bike or a motorbike are much the same - crash and possibly dead !!!

The point is to stop people doing it - not to make it cheaper when they get caught.

If you don't like the penalty don't commit the offense (what was that again about deterrent sentences?? Apply that concept to the Road Rules).
