    Maxxis tyres, cars & shit

I got a new hoop for Mrs B's Galant today. When new tyres are due for my motorcycle I spend too much time researching what is available on the market and debating with myself what to throw on. With her car it was describe the use and yep that sounds good at that price mate. To be fair I may look into car tyres more for my XR6 only because it has twice the power as the Galant, but much less research will be done than the when replacing hoops on the bike.

Why? I've though about this today. Probably because if I end up with a average set on the car it will still perform well, on the bike the risk factor is higher. And the cost. $120 for a decent tyre for her Galant that will last 40-70,000 kms if I keep the pressures good and wheel alignment sweet. We know what bike tyres coat and how long they last ........ OK the XR6 tyres are closer to $200 a pop for something decent but I'll still get over 40,000 out of them.

Interesting the tyre guy stocks Maxxis car tyres and highly recommends them for the XR6. I've notice in the Brit bike magazines Maxxis motorcycle tyres rating well - Fast Bikes magazine give them a big thumbs up - I've not seen them in NZ and the NZ website speaks to cars. Given the analness of Kiwi bikers and tyres (guilty) it is a hard, and small market to break into.

I tend to go for their Buckshot mudders for my 4x4s, good value for money tires. Know nothing about their bike tires though, thats usually Pirelli for the road, and whatever gets thrown out at the dump for my dirtys.

I concur with the opinions re car tyres - they're pretty good. OK, not super-good, but they wear well (as in slowly), grip well wet or dry, and cost little. Feel is good too - when pushing in a car, you can tell pretty much what is going on. Again, not the best, but for the money? Yup - good.

On a bike...? No idea. If the Brits reckon they are OK, then they probably are. There are some really shitty roads over there with variable surface quality, and variable surface coatings (from anything that fell out of the back of any animal, to diesel and ice).

Like most manufacturers they do 2-3 different tyres in most sizes, some are better than others , depends entirely on the application and type of tyre you fit

You would be surprised at the amount of good dirt bike tires I have gotten from the local dump, bike shops must be really fleecing the farmers.

Unless things have changed quite a bit Maxxis is part of Cheng Shin not Kenda

That's interesting as Tyremax are the NZ distributor

    Wouldn't touch em ever again.

Had a set on my smurf and under brakes and going down hill it felt like my brake discs were twisted and fucked. luckily I changed the tires cos two of them wore out super quick on the rear and found with better tires on the problem disapiared.

Your problem was you were driving a smurf.
