    Weird intersection - a question

Driving through Papakura with my mum this afternoon she asked me about an intersection I've driven through countless times but I was at a loss as to how to answer her question. I told her I'd consult the almighty collective KB knowledge data base for enlightenment.
Said intersection is set as follows: looks basically like your typical crossroad except that from the eastern approach it is free thoroughfare in all directions, from the western direction opposite it is a compulsory stop, from the southern approach it is also a compulsory stop, and from the northern approach it is a give way. So here is her question: if two cars approach, one from the south and one from the west they are both on compulsory stops - who has right of way? Is it one of those courtesy options??
(For those of you familiar with Papakura I think it is the East Street and Wood Street intersection).

If South and West both have compulsory Stops, West should give way to South as South is on West's right is my view. This is if both are going straight through.

Look up the rules regarding turning traffic ... that is .. if they ARE turning.

That's another point. If either one is turning they must give way to the other going straight through.

That's what mum thought. However I thought that was primarily a rule for uncontrolled intersections, and yes Trev, the question is based on both vehicles going straight not turning

When signs are of equal status you are back to having to rely on the right hand rule afaik.

There is a t intersection on Cuba st Wellington.
All 4 have stop signs. When there is 4 cars waiting who goes first if they are all going straight through?

    This man is right

Really this is rode code 101 stuff, if people cant work out that they should hand their licence in.

There is a similar intersection in the country side here. Every now and then there is a spate of crashes and the cops were talking about changing all the signs around.
Which is ridiculous as the sharp right turn through that junction is the route ahead eg right of way at all times, really its just a sharp bend with two side roads of it.
The worst thing is the two little roads with the give way signs I think, are both short dead ends so they've already come off the main route and should realise they will be giving way to rejoin it.
Well its just the state of modern day intelligence I guess....

I am not that good at maths but when I was at school a T had only three ends whereas an X had four?

I know this intersection well as I used to work at the top of Cuba Street and had to hang a right on me old FZR600. So much indecision it worked fine unless you were a pedestrian, and they can fuck right off.

Yep. Agree that the OP's mother should hand in her licence but would go further and say that the OP should as well. Dealing with intersections is the most basic shit out there and if you don't know what you are doing you should not be on the road.

And you can fuck off as well. In 35 years of driving I've never had an intersection accident - most are easily readable and logically set out. For all the occasions I've driven through that particular one I have never encountered the scenario I asked about. However I am quite confident that I would respond to it in a way that all vehicles would travel through it quite happily and safely.
