This is like shooting fish in a barrel. They were about 2k new 20 years ago and a cheap and cynical rip off retro. OK hack around going to the shop bike.

A styling exercise on a budget bike. They are OK to bop around the suburbs but gasping on motorway. There were fruggin squillions of them dumped here and sold off cheap.
About $800 used to be the going rate. The 500 was worth more, but same everything budget sort of bike.

In the 80s & 90s & even now Suzuki & Honda et all used NZ as a dumping ground for bikes that were stacked in warehouses in Japan. That's why we got DR400s, XT400s, XZ400s & the like. Wasn't all bad we got RG50s & also FXR150s/RG150s presumably from Thailand.
Honda dumped all the unpopular explosive MVX250s I remember seeing lines of them at Sawyers in wgtn whilst on the schoolbus. GBs were dumped here sort of a one time deal there were heaps, but not like they were imported for years, just a 'here's heaps try get rid of the things'. Couldn't move for them, same with Suzuki Impulses. RF900s were imported normally for like 17k & then they started dumping US & Euro ones of various spec14k, 13k, 12k, 11k. I knew someone who'd bought a full price one, not impressed. Especially as they are a pucey bike. Don't buy one.
Being singles the GBs eventually were revved crazy, run dry, died & were bought by wreckers for very little money & engines (which killed starter clutches) were picked over & the rest weighed in for scrap ally.
Cheap & cheerful fun, but disposable. A classic? Nah, no more than a Kawasaki Zephyr & nobody remembers them.
I admire your 'save now before buy' policy, lived that way my life. You just have to be careful of too many projects while you are young & poor.

Those GB400 and 500's are very sought after in the UK. Not sure why![]()
