Never mind the actual lane hogging, the commentary is the best laugh I've had in ages!
Physics; Thou art a cruel, heartless Bitch-of-a-Mistress
I think you might find it's the other way round... "Stand to the Right" admonish the little signs on the escalators on both the Underground and the Tube, which always seemed slight contrary for a country the drives on the left...
Another 'oddity' in this fashion is that mainline trains in France travel on the left whereas the metros and suburban trains travel on the right...

Prob because we have a motorway design with junction where traffic merges/enters from the right lane (northwestern in Auckland onto sh1 southbound spaghetti junction)
Can you be a lane hog on an empty motoway??? Lots of trucks were/are doing that on night runs in Auckland due to feral trash throwqing rocks from roadside....

yup, learnt escalator etiquette in Japan - had never really thought about it before.
As for lane hogging, it's just part of our f*ck-u mentality as NZ drivers. We really do think we're the only important one on the road! (From a lifetime of observing rude and ignorant drivers on varying numbers of wheels...)
