The spacey ship you are in, makes the simulated pew-pew whoosh-vroom-wub noise of the ones you aren't in; so you can hear what they are up to while deploying the captains log (taking a shit).

Shame the Cinerama was knocked down. Saw "Raid at Entebbe" there as well.
Well, kinda. You do mean "Green screen" not blue though, right?

The major shift from "auteur" cinema to "blockbuster movies" occurred with JAWS which was released prior to STAR WARS. The decade before JAWS is actually my favourite in American film. It was the era of the "director as auteur" and resulted in some brilliant films: EASY RIDER THE GODFATHER, DOG DAY AFTERNOON, etc. I personally dont like EASY RIDER, but its cinematography, and the thought of purple dye trickling down Peter Fonda's ballbag, save it for me.

In fact, if you want to watch a great documentary about it I would recommend "Easy Riders and Raging Bulls"

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0359203/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2

and "A decade under the influence"

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0342275/?ref_=tt_rec_tti

as an examination of the era.

In fact, it is completely arguable that the phenomenon of the "blockbuster" is entirely responsible for the dire state of the industry today. Because as a result of the massive success of the blockbusters, other corporates, not film studios were attracted to the industry, bought up the old school studios, and then ruined the industry by chasing the tentpole movies. There's a really good book by Lynda Obst about it:

TL;DR: Star Wars fucked the movies for movie fans.

It boldly goes where someone went before, and for me fails. I am sorry to say.

I wanted to leave after the first ten minutes, the 3 others I was with were the same.

It picked up when Chewy and Han Solo arrived then .....

but sound waves require a medium, i.e atmosphere, to propagate. Thus, if you blow up a ship in space there will be no sound, except the sound of bits of said ship clanging into your ship. Or, ripping through it. because F = MA bitches. Which is why the best bomb ever would be to drop out of lightspeed at, say, .8C carrying a rock weighing, say, 10000 kg. release said rock on a trajectory which would have it intersecting your designated target. Manoevre out of the way (we can travel faster than light, of COURSE we can do this). Watch with interest as your 10T rock vaporises your target planet.

    You should have left.

I liked it. Thought is was great and I'll go see it again. But I thought from the Ewoks onwards they have been travesties, but I've kept going as the first one was so great. I thought this one was pretty much as good.

    So there.

Some of you like cruisers and bobbers so taste is not a sturdy moral high ground.

Yes but it has sensors, computers, and speakers. Think of it kind of but not really like satnav, the lady isn't actually in your car, nor can she directly see where you are going, but the GPS sensor and computer calculations, and speakers gives a driver relevant telemetry.

After watching half an hour of Episode 1 starring people with dog faces/ears and Jake the Muss I walked out and the Star Wars franchise (c) (TM) won't see any more of my money. The first was a classic. The next two ok because of the story. All the rest no thanks, they smell too much of money grabbing to me.

Surely George Lucas does not need the money? I thought it was a trilogy to begin with. Then it became a sixology by cleverly filling in the first three episodes a few years later but rounding off the story I assumed. And now this. What episode is this one anyway, nine?

George sold Lucasfilm (the owner of STAR WARS) to Disney for FOUR BILLION AMERICAN DOLLARS in cash and stock.

So Disney needs to get its money back therefore Star Wars ad nauseam. They will not see $1 more of my money though.
