Didn't Troy Bayliss get a wild car on it at the Australian GP and finish 8th or summat pretty good for a first time out? Or am I confusing that with Crafar?

Yep Bayliss in '97ish. He was dead slow on the straights but did a lot of wicked out braking and out cornering. It was just after that race (got noticed on the world stage) he got his world super bike seat.

I don't recall that, i remember Micks brother Scott Doohan getting one somewhere.
Garry McCoy got one in the 125 and did very well before fading out for a few years then returning as a total wildman
Magee was robbed of his career, for unknown reasons on one.
His results (when given a ride) were better than anyone that replaced him.

Kevin Magee smashed his head in the Laguna Seca GP. Didn't see much of him in GP's after that. IIRC another prominent Aussie (Gardener maybe) was also hurt on the same corner that had white painted lines on the racing line.

Magee fucked Bubba Shobert up at a time when it was politically indiscreet to threaten US involvement in top level GP racing. What he did to cause that accident was indescribably stupid. The punishment was out of all proportion though.

Shobert publically took the blame for that one.

Maybe entitled is the wrong word here.... what would you call a rider who purposely sandbags in order to prevent another rider from finishing higher up in the standings? All the while.... allowing a rider from a rival manufacturer to take victory unchallenged? To be honest..... not even sure what that word might be. A rider with:
- Poor sportsmanship
- Unethical work ethic towards his team


I never saw Mr. Rossi do anything like that. He always did his best and didn't purposely go out of his way just to slow down another rider. Yup entitled is the wrong word..... not that it doesn't fit MM .... it just doesn't explain the full story.

Regarding getting a chance to race in GPs.... sure some guys have had doors open for them. Spanish riders have some of the WIDEST doors open for them because they have a development program geared towards getting kids to high level racing. As a whole very few countries actually have this kind of a development program. Also, Spanish and Italian passports have always been favoured in GP racing. That's one of the reasons I have always liked seeing non-Europeans winning races. Jack Miller winning - awesome.... Cruthchlow - awesome (OK European, but not from mainland Europe).

But even at a lesser level it goes on. Always will. I was never given a bike to race, but lots pf people way slower that I had 'em handed to them on a platter.

Actually I've been involved with motorcycle racing for over 45 years, as a racer (winning in roadrace, mx and drag racing incl 2 World records) trainer, organiser and sponsor. You should make an attempt to know your target when you make wild statements.

I am very fortunate to know (or have known) many of the great racers from Hailwood to the present Aliens. I am proud to say I even raced against the GOAT Mike Hailwood.....yes and I lost, but no shame in that.

So are the present racers better than Mike or Ago ?? I don't think so, particularly with all the electronic aids. Today all the MotoGP racers are incredible riders, most of them good sportsmen...but money rules GPs in all forms now, if you think otherwise you are a fool.
