Remember when they used to make TV's here...PYE I think they were made in Waihi or somewhere. Noble attempt by Govt to give workers jobs in the regions but I think when we got our B and W one in the early 60's it was probably 6 months wages or more, cars were made here and cost a fortune.

The US who had huge manufacturing capacity have sent it to China and there must be huge Waihi like places with bugger all to do.
When GM went belly up the Govt poured lots of money into that, did it help?

Same thing happened int he UK in the 70's and they seem to have moved on.

simple question, why did the Soviets modify a air-raid shelter into a gas chamber? what was their intention?

When it crashes and it will, I'll feel sorry for all the new people to the market that will lose their hard earned kiwi saver deposits.

Yeah, Phillips had a factory in The Hutt, disappeared around the same time, for exactly the same reason: NZ decided free trade worked better for a primary exporting country than trade barriers did. The Phillips plant made some good stuff, but most protected industries didn't.

We were right then and we're right now, making shit and overcharging for it only works because the customer can't buy from anyone else. And the argument that the customer should pay a premium for shit because otherwise the taxpayer has to is pretty weak. It ignores the option of producers actually offering something their customers actually want to buy, for a realistic price.

Small countries seem to do better by specialising more, but other than boatbuilding we don't seem to make it easy for such industries.

Yeah ok you can accept that if you can also accept child slave labour and NO workers rights which is the only reason imports are as cheap as they are.

It's not a 'free' market when the people creating the goods are slaves

IF they weren't 'creating the goods' and doing whatever they did before creating said goods would they be better off?

The systems do correct a bit.

Already, the Chinese middle classes want their standards to improve and their wage expectations have risen. That's driven some manufacturing out of China to the next-cheapest in line.

A good way to get equality and a "free" market is for everyone's standards to rise to the same level.

Two bedroom Home Units near me are over 700K, they say due to immigration but generally immigrants don't turn up with a lot cash..., the world awash with cheap fiat money and investors who no longer wish to have money in the bank returning pittance.

TV's will go up in price in the US once they start making them locally.

I don't think you can avoid the pyramid of low earners at the bottom and the 1% at the top, I was in India last year and seeing a Western looking Audi dealers in among the poverty tends to suggest there is some money there for a few, seen similar in other Asian countries too.

    Agreed...

1%ers use the 'free market' as a 'pyramid scheme'..

I wonder if Trump will manage to avoid paying tax on his presidential salary.

I think you're confusing Indians and Chinese with Samoans.
