I couldn't watch the rest of that, I kept wanting to turn the tablet so I could see more than the dash and the pillar

Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.
Dear oh dear eh very sad, grew up at Fernihurst (just north of the Hawkswood S bends when they were there) and spent many hours on the Hundalees when a young fella,as it was basically my back yard and in the middle of nowhere normal rules didnt apply and spent much time there on trail bikes,no rego/licence (to young to get one) etc all good way back then,Cheviot cop wrote his Cortina off chasing the old man on his 900SS around the S bends somewhere.Be nice to think the road will be fixed but doubt it.
Be the person your dog thinks you are...
it simply has to be, if they write this one off and in a few years there's a similar event further inland, think alpine fault, and the lewis pass option becomes an even bigger task to fix(remember at least here they can get machinary in easier than inland) then where is our country at?
Agree with jellywrestler...
said this on another thread:
I think that by next week you'll find that the government will be ready to repair the road...
Why? Kaikoura is a major tourist attraction and the road or rail there is part of the attraction and that means money coming in to the economy. What is to be seen that is as spectacular as whales and seals if you go over the Lewis Pass?
Also, if the road is not repaired what will be done about the rail line? Cut it off at Christchurch? Doubt it... Would mean building new infrastructure at Lyttelton for rail and then extending the Interislander service to Lyttelton as well, that's big money... Or you just abandon rail in the South Island altogether...
Certainly hope it is fixed but dunno,Kaikoura has its tourist attractions for sure but enough to warrant the repair bill? Heard a few rumors re the railway ie coming through Molesworth etc.Hope your right and the roads fixed guys.

another route would take years and years and is just a joke, look at transmission gully, twenty odd kms and it's taking six years, the majority of the existing rail link is ok and will certainlly need a good check, the rest they'll need to roll their sleeves up for but just get on with it, once the aftershocks die down.
i've heard a rumour of a tunnel from wellington to chch too
I have to say - crawling home along the wellie to Kapiti coast road the other day after a rescue mission inside our building - 40 taranaki st... I looked at the hills and bluffs above the road and couldnt get out of there fast enough..
BUT,but, but...It's a road of National Importance!!! IE the transport lobby is screaming because they're losing money - and because they're more important than mere ChCh residents we'll see the full might of everything that can be scraped together thrown at it.
If ChCh had held enough seats to make winning them important to getting back into government we'd have seen a shitload more interest in fixing it.
Look at the West Coast - no votes in going into the mine...QED
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987

Yeah - happens. I remember holidaying up Kaiteriteri and shopping in Motuekua Jan 2011 after the September 2010 shake buggered by house - a lady in the Mitre 10 said Christchurch people? I asked how she could tell - she answered 'you lead in the door looked up and around and then allowed your kids in' ...... I was not aware I was doing that!
