Who on here actually thinks the us system is a good model?

Not me. Their cash bail system is grossly unjust. The impecunious who can't make bail stay locked up. Currently there are thousands in prison who have not been found guilty of any crime, they just can't raise the sum required to be released on bail. In some states the court system is broken, cases can take years to get to court meanwhile people remain incarcerated. Modern day debtors prisons in a country where debtors prisons are illegal.

People with money just pay up and walk.

The story of Kalief Browder was particularly tragic. Three years on Rikers Island, much of it in solitary, for a crime he didn't commit and for which he was never tried. Google has lots of links.

He entered an Alford plea for some charges which means he doesn't admit to committing the act but believes the evidence is too strong for him to prevail at trial.
