"I have a healthy mistrust for government and I still got vaccinated. Yes the vaccine didn't do what the testing said it was going to do. I still have a healthy trust for government and I will still get my booster... and expect all of you to do the same because the government said so... and hey, I don't trust the government so what does that say to you?".......

Appears John Minto has been bought out by the elite....

    https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/polit...e-social-media

The last couple of paragraphs he’s basically proposing a Chinese style social credit score system where the state allows users controlled access to selected media sites....
Now that wouldn’t cause any problems at all....

Funny how there was nothing wrong with social media when it came to trump/climate/BLM/occupywallst......

Y'all will be aware by now that Eminem took a knee during the Super Bowl half time show and managed to trigger the redneck population in the US.

Rudy Giuliani, playing to his audience, suggested that Eminem should leave the country. It ended badly for Rudy.

    RIP PJ O'Rourke

A little saddened to see the passing of an author that I enjoyed for some years:

    https://www.theguardian.com/media/20...ourke-obituary

Which brought to mind one of his more memorable books , "Give War a Chance". I must find my copy on the bookshelf and re-read it sometime.

    https://www.strategic-culture.org/ne...en-in-ukraine/

And as the author of the above article asked, I wonder what PJ would have made of the current situation (that one centred around Ukraine). Sadly, now, it's too late to ask.

    RIP PJ.

That article could have been written by Robert Fisk.

    Yup, your post reminded me.

It could just be a consequence of the sheer scale of internet "journalism" but I'm struggling to think of a modern commentator with the same clout and taste for truth.

    Evening.

The only political commentators that I can think of that might have come remotely close would be:

    - John Pilger (of a comparable age / vintage)
    - the late Andre Vltchek (who died September 2020)

John Pilger has been an investigative journalist for about as long as Robert Fisk, but he has tended to devote himself more to writing books. He still operates his own website, but tends not to update it very often:

    http://johnpilger.com/articles#

The late Andre Vltchek was much more like Robert Fisk, working as an investigative journalist around the world. But he died suddenly in 2018 (aged only 58), so worked for 15 years less than Fisk. That said, he travelled quite extensively around the world, and wrote accordingly. An archive of his articles is still available online.

Lots of varied reports in the media today about Ukrainian goings on.

Unsubstantiated claims of tanks and Russian special forces in the breakaway regions.

There existed a narrow timescale when heavy tanks can operate effectively in this region due to soft ground. If it was going to be a big push would have been full on by now. It seems two areas declared independence, no doubt some Russian forces will settle here.
People new to this conflict may have missed that separatists (and likely special forces) have been involved in gunfights with Ukrainian forces for last several years at least.
