Not always. Our first hens were rescues from the farm at Pauatahui, Due for the chop, we got six of them $5 each. They continued laying for at least 4 more years and lived out their lives. Others have been added as the old ones drop off. Waiting to find out if the latest the chicks are hens or roosters. If roos, Nadia Lim had a nice recipe for Coq Au Vin.
