As it appears fruitless to continue to talk about RUC for cyclists (it ain't gonna happen, coz it can't) maybe we can put that to one side.

Its not just about the tax. I dont understand why they are ditching the pay at pump. It is very efficient way of collecting the money. I can understand the need to introduce the RUC for full evs, and with a little massaging they could target the PHEVs and the Hybrids (more) fairly
The explanation must be that they want to introduce congestion charging and the like. So there is the requirement for devices on every car. Gonna be hella expensive to start with

I dunno, trackable helmets, trackable mouthguards, there's probably an ambitious executive somewhere at ACC looking at upping his bonus right now...

$40 for the tracker from the reports I've been hearing, 40% of the existing fleet probably need one (1.5 million vehicles from some rudimentary googling), that's a nice $60 million windfall for someone.

So that’s another APP on phone you paid for collecting your private info in background.Gonba be great for disease control having someone handling several thousand phones in a row at a checkpoint.
Original licence still an option but for how long…

Seems a bit of a non-event, given what they’re really saying is we’re going to let you access those records digitally through a phone app to save us making and sending you a card/label, surely that info is already stored in a digital database somewhere for govt agencies to access.

Try flying anywhere out of the country and showing your phone drivers licence to a car hire company.

Those countries that have a digital licence also have a paper licence. The digital licence is only a backup and not accepted as ID for everything.

Least it's a government one, not a private company. Both will be available, can't imagine the physical copy will go away any time soon, this is just the start of the process.

I found the NZTA app, thought it would be good to keep all my vehicles details in one place. WoF, reg expiry, that sort of thing.

I had no end of trouble getting it to work, as it cycled through various RealME requirements to actually create the account, and get it to work. Yes, I ghave up several times over several months, but inquizitiveness led me to keep coming back to the well to drink.

Anyway, I finally have it working, and not once have I considred it to be invasive. It's convenient.

It's the frog in the water thing, now that I reflect on it. I guess he info could be used for purposes I don't think of. If they add the DL to it, that would be useful.

But I do reserve the right to keep the plastic card as well. Which appears to be in the proposal they are talking about.

Trouble with having a photo of your DL on you phone is that photos can be easily changed. That's why it's not legal tender. They will have to be careful that electronic licences can't be changed in Photoshop or similar.

I also have my old green book, issued by Invercargill City Council, before those plastic/paper lifetime licences, turned 60 yesterday, I've seen the system change while I worked in it in various roles, and still do.

The Drivers Licence would have to be accessible only in the official app to give it any legitimacy.

Having said that, how long before AI can vibecode a dummy app? Putting all our eggs in a digital basket may turn out to be an ongoing nightmare.

Have you tried the English language? Might be worth giving it a go.

You don't need e-tags or gps trackers for tolls. Tolls are to pay for new roads because the government won't pay any longer. It has cost billions for roads like Transmission Gully, which are not tolled, and the government will be paying the companies that built them for decades.
