Race Report: Round 6 GNCC Series, John Penton
Rider: Paul Whibley

Creasting a hill on the drive into the John Penton GNCC on Saturday revealed
a thick dust hanging in the air. The quads raced around the Sunday Creek MX track that served as the start and focal point of the GNCC course sending up blinding clouds of soil. I was hoping for rain but it never came.
Sunday was a welcome relief with the temperature now at a more pleasant 65f/18c and less dust was being kicked up by the morning bike race. The track crew had been working hard and had made some gains in keeping the dust down around the MX track.

From the start it was destined to be a tough day. Being in the back of the pack of the start and trying to see through the dust was hard work. I managed to get up into about 10th on lap 1. I had a minor off track excursion when I went off line and over a bank into a mudhole. The grips were all covered in mud and slime but I only lost 1 position which was lucky.

The track was 11 miles on the first lap but was pushed out to a 14 mile lap for the 2nd lap and the rest of the race. I think this was a measure to lessen the effects of the dust and it worked great as the lapped riders were spread out and not encountered until late in the 3rd lap. We gassed at the end of lap 3, as it was to be a 5 lap race. I had caught Glen Kearney several times during the race but always lost contact again, as we enter some of the real dusty sections and had struggled to find anywhere to try and pass.
Finally on the 4th lap I squared up a corner out in a dusty field and shot past, with Glenn now in my dust he couldn't stay with me.

Later that lap I past Jenks and Robinson in the pits as they stopped for a splash of gas. By the end of the race I had moved up to 6th.

Post race I was talking to Scott about how the race had gone. He mentioned off the start, the last 3 bikes off the line were Garrett Edmisten, David Knight and me. The three of us were the only 450s on the pro line and we all had a terrible start. Knight managed to move up to 4th, I made it up to 6th and Edmisten managed 12th. In the thick dust and limited visability we were lucky to get that far.

Race Report: Round 7 GNCC Series, Sparta
Rider: Paul Whibley
Team: Moose, Parts Unlimited, Honda

The Spartan GNCC didn't hold any better luck for me on this roller coaster
season.

After suffering from a mystery virus leading up to this race I was only 80%
fit and strong when I rolled to the start line.

After a bad start I began to work my way forward. At the end of lap one I
had fought my way up to 10th. The lap was long again, around 15 miles and
the dust had been minimized by alot of fresh trail being used.
On the second lap I got into a race with Wattsy and we caught young Aussie
Josh Strang. I ended up in front of them both, as Wattsy had a big endo
into a root infested creek crossing and Josh wiped out on a choppy right
hander. I caught up to Edmisten in 7th, who was just behind Russell Bobbitt
in 6th, when bad luck struck again.

A rock (I think) hit the chain guide and it began rattling around. I
stopped and checked out what was causing the noise. A quick look revealed
the mount had been busted off the swing arm and one bolt was holding the
guide on. I knew if it came off I was in trouble.

I made it back near the pits and saw Katherine holding a pitboard. I
stopped and told her to tell the pit crew that I was coming in for repairs.
Morrie was onto it and was ready when I got to the pits. The best we could
do was run a heap of zip ties around it and hope it held on. I went back
out and made up a bunch of positions but the chain guide ended up breaking
free and derailing the chain.

With some help of some friendly spectators I got back to the pits and the
chain was overtightened to stop it jumping off the sprokets, so I could try
to finish the last lap.

I had lost a lot of time and positions. I managed to finish the race 13th
in class and 22nd overall. Not what I had hoped for.
One more race before Summer break, the Snow Shoe. A new venue at a ski
complex that promises another long challenging lap.

Race Report: Snowshoe GNCC, W.V.

The top of the Snowshoe mountain complex offered amazing views over the
surrounding forrests of the area. The picturesque panorama of these
unspoilt mountains promised a true GNCC course. These same forrests shrouded
and belittled the true texture of the track, that the GNCC crew was about to
spring on the racers.

The start was a little unconventional, with a live engine start in rows of
five on a tarseal road. This was due to limited space at the top of the
mountain but the system worked very well.
I was on row 2, and got a good start around the first turn, second in my
group. I moved up one position on the fast road sections early in the lap
and could see the back of row 1 riders through the dust.

We then hit some of the knarly stuff. Already lines went in all directions
through the forest. I would pass riders and riders would pass me, often without
even knowing it. Bikes were stopped on the side of the track, with guysers of
steam erupting from the radiator or a rider frantically trying to adjust a
fried clutch to no avail.

Still suffering from the mystery virus that has been affecting me over the
last couple weeks, I rode a conservative race. I knew I didn't have the
energy to attack the track in my usual manner. I also knew that riding and
attacking the track too hard could easily end in disaster. So I rode at a
pace I could last 3 hours, I knew my bike was good to go.

On the last lap I think I was down in about 9th and my energy reserves were
about nil. But I wanted so bad to get some good pionts so I pushed as hard
as I could. Some how, some where I passed a couple of guys and moved up to 7th.

I was dead after the race, I left it all on the track but was happy to get a
result.
A big thanks have to go to all the track crew, spectators and team personal
who were out there in the forrest pointing lines and assisting the riders.

Race Report,
District 11 (Ohio) 5 Brothers XC and Thunder in the Hills XC

Friday arrived with the realization that a race had not been found to
compete in over the weekend. A desprite search on the internet found a 5
Brothers 2 hour XC up in Ohio. We also found another race for Sunday only
30 minutes drive from the Saturday event.
We arrived at the track on Saturday and set up pits next to GNCC regular
Brian Garrahan.

My bike failed to fire first kick off the start and I looked across the line
to see Brian lookin back at me laughing as we both sat there kicking our
450s into life. I tore though the pack on the first lap and ended up leading
by the end of the lap. I had pushed to hard and my arms had pumped up. For
the next couple of lap I rode around in the lead but failed to put a gap on
2nd placed rider Cory Buttrick and Brian in 3rd. Mid race my arms came right
and I was able to pull a gap and rode home to the chequers. Brian had got
past Cory to bring his Yamaha home in 2nd.

Sunday and a 6 mile loop was ready to be torn up at the Hidden Valley
complex. The race begain about 1 pm and I tucked in behind Cory Buttrick on
lap 1 and let him lead me around. Cory has raced at this venue a lot and knew
the lay of the land well. I was happy in behind him as he set a blistering
first lap pace that saw us gap the field instantly. I was impressed by
Corys pace, he is definitely one to watch for in the future.

Cory lead the first few laps, I was waiting for a chance to make a pass. The chance came when he lost drive coming out onto a grass section near the end of the lap.
I got the 450 cranked up and shot past, into the lead. I stepped up the pace
and soon had a comfortable lead. I continued to push to the finish, enjoying
the flowing track.

Race Report.
Kentucky Harescramble Series, Clay City.
Rider. Paul WhibleyTeam. Moose, Parts Unlimited, Honda
Bike. Honda CRF 450x

Round 6 of the Kentucky Harescramble Series started under seriously hot
conditions. Riders sat on the line melting in the 95/36 degree temperatures.
I was extremly grateful to be wearing Moose Sahara (vented) gear. This stuff
is amazing, even with the very slight breeze I could feel the air
circulating through and cooling my body.
Off the start, I was second round the first corner (!!) and quickly moved to
the front. The track had been freashly bulldozed and was quite fast. It was
a blast to race as there were nice berms forming on the corners, plenty of
lines to choose from and room to move around slower riders. Although as the
race wore on some sections got dusty and others packed down and became
slick.
By the fuel stop I had enough of a lead I decided to try some adjustments to
my suspension. RG3 have been working hard on improving my current set up and
we are making good gains. Late in the race I got a big surprise when a rouge
CRF 450 leapt out of the bushes and tried to occupy the same line I was
railing along in 4th gear. Ill get you next time Kenny!!! ( Ha )
I had a blast out front and took the win. The organizers must have sensed
how much fun I was having as they sent me out for an extra lap.
Morrie my friend and mechanic was also racing on the CRF 250x and came home
in 4th place.

Paul had a pretty good race, getting back to 5th from being back in 10th @ one stage.
A 9 mile track including backwards around the mx track ( evil drop off ). None of the nasty rocks from Somerset. but a number of tree roots, David Knight blitzed the field, the guy is seriously quick.
For the Suzuki fans, it was 2/3/4 Suzuki ( Jarret/Strang/Kearney ), even better only 1 of the top 5 was American .
I got a few pic's of Whibley if anyones keen I can put em up.

Race Report: Round 10 GNCC Series

Round 10 of the GNCC Series was held at the famous Unadilla complex.
Last year it poured down on Sunday morning and made the race a muddy hell.
This year it stayed dry on Sunday, with showers on Saturday the track was
watered to perfection.
I got a good start and rounded turn one inside the top ten. I followed
Wattsy on the first lap and tried to ride smooth to try and prevent arm
pump.
I was riding a bit tight as the track was slick, with a lot of small rocks
in the ground. Once I loosened up I started to move my way forward.
After the fuel stop I got into a battle with Garett Edminsten. It was fun
to ride with another 450 rider. We traded positions a couple of times until
I got the better of him and pulled away, to chase down Charlie Mullins and
Barry Hawk.
By the end of the race I had moved up to 5th place.
It was a difficult race, with a shorter lap and a lot of riders on the
course but the track was fun to ride.

Race Report: Round 10,
Mid East Harescramble

With the next GNCC being held at Yadkinville, a Mid East Harescramble was held the weekend before, only four miles away. With some practice in mind I headed south from Cincinnati to Boonville.

Jason Raines was at the event along with local and series champion Jesse Robinson.
I got a good start following Raines in 5th place, early in the lap I moved past him on a tricky root infested hill. Next up was team Powersport Grafixs' duo of Kailub Russell and Jason Gilleland.

I moved up to 2nd behind Jesse on one of the fast grass sections. There was a small bog hole near the end of lap one and I used a line hard to the right, jumping across and passing Jesse for the lead.

Jesse kept the pressure on and followed me for the next couple of laps. It was difficult to pull away, as in the tight sections the lapped traffic was heavy.

After about an hour I gapped Jesse and began to pull a lead. By the end of the two hour race, I had just under a minute lead on Jesse, with Jason Raines coming home in third.

Race Report: Round 11, GNCC Yadkinville

Dust was set to be a factor again at the Yadkinville GNCC, as we could see clouds of the red
soil rising through the trees as we drove in on Saturday.
Off the line I got my best ever start and was 3rd around turn one, with Jimmy Jarrett and Charlie
Mullins leading the way. A short grass section before we dove into a really tight and dusty woods
section. Lap one completed and I was still in 3rd.
Early in lap two I stalled and Barry Hawk passed me. It was hard to hang with him in the dust,
so I dropped back a bit to ride relaxed and avoid hitting any unseen obstacles.
After a quick stop for fuel, I was in 5th position. I got on a mission and
began moving up. Jimmy Jarrett who had been running in 2nd crashed and dropped back.
I soon caught and passed Barry, moving up into 3rd. I was getting pit board signals that I
was gaining on Garrett in 2nd. I caught and passed him on the 5th lap. With 2 laps to
go, I was getting signals I was gaining on Charlie Mullins, who was leading the race.
By the chequers I had narrowed the gap, but had to settle for 2nd position.
After everything that has happened this year, I was really happy to be back up on that
podium.

Race Report: Round 12 GNCC,
Powerline Park St. Clairesville

The dust could be seen driving into the track from the morning race. Clouds of it hung
over the woods and fields, leaving no doubts about this race.
A good start was going to be critical in the event and I pulled off another top one.

I lined up out wide and swept round the outside of turn one in about 5th, but on the
second turn I got hit from behind and pushed out letting everyone go by me on the inside.
The dust was unbelievable, on about the forth corner we were at a stand still. I could
see a helmet in front but that was it. I ended up going off the track without realising.

Once out of the dust cloud I could see where the track went and was able to rejoin the
race. In the woods some sections had two or three foot deep powder lying on the ground.
I spent most of the first half of the race chasing Robbie Jenks dust, in 10th, unable to see
a way past or even see him really. After the fuel stop I managed to get past Robbie and
also Garret Edminston. The dust was so thick many of the two strokes began to blubber
and some had to stop to change filters.

I got past Jesse Robinson and Josh Strang, later in the race to finish in 5th place.
I was happy to finish as many guys had bike problems in the blinding dust. I found the
race more mentally taxing than physically draining due to all the straining to
see. It was the most dusty race I have ever ridden.

Race Report:

Round 9 OMA Series

With a spare weekend before the final GNCC I hitched a ride to Round 9 of the OMA series with Marty Michels.
We pulled into the venue early Sunday and saw the start in a corn field with a 500m start straight. Just like home.

Off the line my bike fired up perfect and I grabbed the holeshot and led the way out through the corn fields.
Some of the sections early in the lap were tapped out through the corn fields. It was a real blast.
Then we hit the woods and in true OMA style they were tight and virginal. I was leading the way searching for the track,
trying to follow the arrows and everyone else just followed me. I soon learned my lesson and just followed someone
else.
This race had a lap of 35 miles and there was to be only 2 laps. Near the end of lap one I decided to put my head
down and make a break. Lap one was completed in an hour and 20 minutes and I had a gap of 15 seconds over Jimmy Jarrett.

I made a small mistake on lap 2 and lost the track allowing Jimmy to take the lead. I soon caught back up and the race was
back on. It was alot of fun to race with Jimmy as we swapped positions and pushed each other. We had gapped the rest of the
the field so it was to be a 2 rider race right to the end, until a stump clipped by gear lever. The impact left my bike jammed in
4th gear, and Jimmy began to pull away. It was hard work to get the bike through some of the tight sections, the clutch
got a real workout. I managed to hang onto 2nd spot with Jimmy winning by about 20 sec and Brian Garrahan
in 3rd.

It was a really fun race and I will be back next year for sure.
