    Super E

Thinking of upgrading my carb to a Super E, In order to make use of the current air cleaner (prior owner paid $600 for it....madness) and to save a few hundred dollars I was looking at the Carb only package, I can get one landed for about $300nz which is dirt cheap compared to the full kit.

    This is her.

Can anyone who has fitted these before inform me if this will be cost effective? Is the required manifold and plumbing a huge issue? hard to get? Fabricated?

I will be paying a mechanic to do the work, so all extra parts and time spent shagging around will be coming out of my pockets.

Ring HD Cycles in Hamilton, they'd know.

Of course I could sell you a pristine Screaming Eagle twin-throat, complete with intake manifold, for the same money........

you will need the appropriate manifold to bolt the carb on, second hand these come up at good prices new not so cheap.

is the bolt pattern on the s&s aircleaner the same as your air cleaner? if not you will need an adapter and they are not exactly cheap

    what actually is your aircleaner?

it may be cheaper to get the s&s aircleaner and flick on the aircleaner you already have

J&P price does this include frieght, they tend to add a lot on for freight

GST, you will get stung when it arrives in NZ, you need to factor this into the equation

s&s is a good carb but if you want more bang for your buck what camshaft are you running? standard?

an EV27 cam will give a lot more bang for the buck than changing your carb, CV carb is not as bad as earlier carbs fitted back in the 70's & 80's

Cheers, I'll chase up the price of a manifold, any idea about the rest of the junk in the full kit?

The adapter to fit my air cleaner is $40usd, Freight will be whatever USPS charges so thats no drama but purchases with be made from M&M Cycles rather then J&P.

GST?, should be right, I'm told $400 is the threshold and I have been bringing stuff in all year from HK and the USA and haven't been stung yet.

Having said all that, It appears the Harley dealership who fitted the air cleaner muffed it, had the gasket scrunched up blocking off one of the airways/fuelways?

They then tried to tune around their incompetence, Made the bike run rough as guts and gave the then owner a big bill.

Me mate who pulled it all apart last week and found the underlying issue reckons its the worst setup he has seen, Everything was setup way way way out of whack to compensate for the installation error.

She runs all sweet now, So a replacement carb is off the priority list, and everything I have read seems to suggest that the CV carb is perfectly fine until you sink some serious money into the engine and it starts screaming out for more air/fuel.

My current air cleaner is one of these

Not even sure if I like it, though it is shiny.

A cam (I had been eyeing up the EV3) and replacement ignition are on the short list.

ev27 is a better cam than a ev3, basically a later improved version where power comes in earlier and has similar top end

know several people who have eV27 and all are perfectly happy with them

The E is good. I had one and it was ten times betterthan the standard carb. Just make sure you have all the necessary pieces to get it bolted on to your engine properly.

Not wrong if you're using the Evo heads. Upgrade the heads and you can reach out further with your compression and cam. It's an exponential curve. Just do it.
