Didn't Robert Holden have the pleasure of ripping one of these around the I.O.M ?

This doesn't look to bad either

Hmmm interesting, Ducati's site has the Supermono as a 992cc single

    ENGINE
Type Bicilindrico ad L, distribuzione Desmodromica 2 valvole per cilindro, raffreddamento ad aria
    Bore and Stroke 94 x 71,5 mm
    Total displacement 992 cc
    Compression ratio 10:1
Timing system Double overhead camshaft, 4 valves, toothed belt, desmodromic system

But even as a 570cc bike, it's got some serious stonk. I never saw one here, but the concept is fantastic. A better road engine than a twin maybe?

After riding a supermoto 650 I was instantly wondering why no one has produced a sportsbike equivalent, 'cos the braking and handling are incredible. If they can build a simple road legal 60hp offroader that weighs 110kg's then surely a similar weight sportsbike should be possible.
Unfortunately not many manufacturers have got the balls to make it in it's purest form. The bean counters will insist in a dual seat (meaning a heavy subframe), pillion pegs, crap brakes and suspension, 10000km service intervals etc. And before you know it you've got something with 45hp and weighs 160kg's.......yawn.

Gilera Saturno was pretty - there are some in NZ.
Some English bike mag put an aprilia 550 vtwin into an aprilia rs250 frame. Nice but with a 50 hour maintenance interval...
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

pi * d squared /4 * l =496 . There was a supermono on Ebay in january last year. They were talking numbers in the $US200,000 region

A shame, it looks like it's cocked up. That Italian text says it's got two cylinders in a L-twin shape (90-degree V-twin), 2-valve, etc. Strange because afterwards it says it's 4-valve.

each description is half right. It was a L twin shape, just that the vertical con rod was attached to another balancer rod but no piston. And it was a dohc 4 valve.

I'd love to see a drawing of this, sounds fascinating. So this balancer mechanism actually protrudes from the crankcase? Why such a way of doing it?

    from http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~fh...%20museum.html
I could be wrong but a 90 degree v twin has (close to) perfect balance. Doing it this way maintains the balance but with a single piston engine without the power sapping characteristics of balancer shafts and their attendant crappy chain drive

Husgvarna have come close with a cross between a supermoto and a naked bike. I think it was about 650cc. Me, I've always preferred naked styling to fairings and think this bike looks like sex on wheels.

Just had a nosey through a couple of books and Rodney O'Connor's bike was the same bike Robert Holden rode

Robert raced it at the 94 I.O.M (2nd place in the singles race) and also Assen & Monza, and DNFed at the Ulster GP because of big-end failure which was traced back to someone installing the wrong connecting-rod bolts during the assembly process (Hand built).

Rodney O'Connor received the bike after this and raced it in stock trim in the 95 NZ formula 3 series winning every race, though having your old man owner of Eurobike they could afford a then $42000 toy

I'm sure I remember seeing Robert Holden race it in the F3 Champs here at Ruapuna NZ, back in the very early 90's.
