Why are Harley's refered to as "Hogs"?

Is it because they are absolute pigs to ride?

    Just curious...

I only see the nerds as described above on sunny days with pristine bikes that never see a wet day. I've seen/met tossers on all sorts of bikes. I don't think dorks are brand-specific.

Leaning on your wrists all day doesn't do it for me and I find the laid-back positioning of the bod on the HD quite comfy, I can sit there all day and often do. I knew the bike had a suspect head gasket when I bought it; I fixed it myself with basic hand tools and haven't touched the engine since. (Apart from oil changes, plugs etc.) I don't diss jap bikes but I'd never own one. I've ridden some fast buggers and they far exceed my high-speed riding abilities so why go there? Part of the attraction for me was self preservation.

The reason it doesn't go around corners like a sports bike is coz it isn't one. It's the same reason it doesn't do wheelstands all day long, or stoppies etc. What it can do is perform touring duties with aplomb, heavily laden if you like, it won't care. I like the rumble, the styling and it's all-round solidity.

Why do some people hate Harleys? Dunno. Why do some people like sports bikes? Why do some blokes go for other blokes? (I don't think that's right.) Why do people drink Guinness? Why do people eat chicken's feet?

Why do some people think the world is round? (Fuckin' idiots.)
Hey man, chill out. The part of this thread you quoted me on was just a bit of banter with another KBer. Check out my earlier post in this thread and you'll see that I don't hate Harley's (or any other make of bike for that matter) - they're just not for me.....

i said unless there is some on the tyre i did not say there was some.how do you know what your driving through at high speed or following a stock truck NZ roads are a cesspit of filth should it be known, and just to clear another point i ride my bike all year round wet or dry not just on sunny days and i dont ride to the pub with all the guys and swagger round looking at there bikes like a magpie, my bike is smine i paid for it i will ride whenever the mood takes me, i enjoy my bike its my freedom not just two wheels, if you dont like it or other bikes that are simular harleys/hondas/suzuki/kawasaki/mv/bmw touring bikes thats your choice, no i cant get round a corner as fast as a sports bike or fly down the road the same, but i did all that years ago ive seen good mates dead on the side of the road one went through the back of a bedford van and ended up losing half of his head hanging out of the windshield, i was riding a norton 750 then, so i have been there done that i have nothing to prove nothing to gain, i will leave the fast life to you to leave your mark i just hope that i do not have to stop and help pick up your peices when you have serious bin for the love of speed after all its your life do what you will

Beginning in 1920 a team of farm boys down South that would become known as the "hog boys" consistently won races. The group had a hog, or pig as their mascot. Following a win, they would put the pig (a real one) on the back of their Harley and take a victory lap.[27] In 1983, an organization was formed, taking advantage of the long-standing nickname by turning "hog" into the acronym H.O.G.

    Hey thanks Dude!

So they had a love pig as a mascot?

I wonder if that is where the term "Boar and Stoke" came from?

You're quite right, was that Joe Walter and 'The wrecking crew'? They won everything!

I do enjoy the sound of a good harley sound. Problem these days is it very hard to find a good harley sound.
    I blame the chinese parts.
On the other side of the coin the new triples sound way better than the old ones.
I would like to comment on new 2 strokes.....but their aren't any. Most of the modern ones are still based on a 10 year old design with a few extra "features"
As far as im concerned the best bikes in the world are the simplest - sadly harley didn't go down this path.
Anyone who tells you harley engines are simple has as much experience with them as my girlfriend. They can be as simple or as complicated as your mind allows.
