Definetly, and even with cars, you often read in the magazines they spend a few hours fine tuning their launching to get "that time" often not close to the claimed time anyway.

Then you've got all the vairiables, clutch wear/heat, tires, road conditions and air conditions, fuel type (possibley not as good as what it should be) all could affect the time by possibley 50% or more....

So there is the "theoretical best time" given perfect conditions, then theres the "theoritcal best" given the conditions YOU have, then how well you can launch it, and you start to get alot slower than what manufactures claim.

Great for magazines to use to compare them though... gets stuck in peoples heads and i suspect people buy cars based on it, possibley not bikes, really something thats not important at all day to day, apart from bragging rights off course!!!

    yep, hilarious aint it!

no matter how fast a car is, chances are they are always gonna be held up by the little old lady in the Morris Minor hunched over the steering wheel as even the cheapest of bikes with 20HP cruise past both

100 to 0km/hr is more important

Ninja till 100 will do in 3.2-3.5 seconds and 1/4 mile in 9.8
Gixxer will do 100 in 7seconds i quess, and 1/4 mile in 15.75

On paper a very respectable 4.5 secs, but important thing as said here is that can show clean pair of heals to pretty much any car on the roads without effort as such. Do 0-100kph entering motorway from lights and with fair acceleration not caning it but enough to leave cars 100m+ behind think am usually doing it in about 6 or 7 secs or so.

More important and where lack of superbike-style power really shows is middle gears in-gear acceleration. Hot cars pick back up on me then without more of a conscious effort to drop them.

Particularly when both the rider and their steed are unscathed.

    Whoops...........

Most times quoted are test results, not manufacturers figures.Test results by people who are very good at drag racing, normally.
The only cars I wouldn't take on......Porsche GT3....or a well driven modded Skyline etc.
Dragging Black Yoshis GTR up Kaukop way on the 1000, it was pretty level pegging through the gears until around 11,000, when I could start to haul him in. 0-2.....k, was a win for the bike, but not by that much..!

Me: "Hey guys! I can go from 0 to 100 in 10 seconds!"
    Friend: "O rly..."

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

100 is being a bit optimistic isn't it?

    Or is this downhill?

The stats say 3.5 secs, but I'm pretty certain I don't get close to it.

On the subject of cars not to take on, I used to have a Caterham 7 (Lotus 7 replica) back in the UK. It would get close to staying with sports 600's to maybe 100mph. It didn't have the power to weight of the bike 190 BHP and 530 KGs but it had more traction off of the line and you didn't have to worry about keeping the front wheels on the ground. Hit the twisty bits though and it left the bikes behind

Of course, it's down a long, long, loooonnnngggg steep hill.
