blah on the rattley cams, it is a engine out and back in to fix it.
However everyone ive asked says it dosnt matter,
aparently theres a split cog that keeps load on the cams to stop them rattling, also for race motors it seems that the done thing is to remove this cog. only rattles at low revs (like idle).
so if the VFR your looking at has done ~50+ kms and idling is set to 2k might pay to check it out(unless you dont care about rattles)

As for the 400z, yes this is the naked one. 1986 model, with 64hp (according to some website I looked it up on when I had mine).

Annoying how these bikes are so damn expensive here. The bike shops are making a killing importing and selling them.

I bought my nc21 for R8000.00 in 2003. It had 36000kms on the clock and would have been about NZ$1500 at the time. This was from a bike shop that brought it in from Japan.

Now you can buy NC30's with 20000kms in SA for R15 000 (about NZ$3000) also from bike shops, so I really don't know why these bikes are so damn expensive here.

NC35's go for R25000 ($5000) for a perfect one.

What the bike shop told me is that the V4 engines are prone to the camshaft seat's wearing because of the pressure the cam gears put on the shafts as they're spring loaded.

Hmmmm.... maybe. But the springs are only lightweight, and only there to take some play out of the scissor gears and thereby reduce noise. You *can* take them out.

I had an NC21 before (VFR 400Z) which did seem to have a lot more power, and even Folcan's (my little brother) NC24 seems to go a bit better.

Some of the models are restricted, and there are differences between them as far as valve timing, carbs, exhaust header diameters, etc.

Supply and demand. There are a lot of people getting into bikes now, and the VFR400s are one of the better bikes for bikers to get into once they're ready to step up from a 250.

question wot size tyres do these run i no they got 16 front 18 rear wondering if i can swop tyres from my fz the rims are the same size not sure on the width though.

Nice VFR - is it from Red Baron (red sticker on lower fork leg)?
I bought my '90 VFR750 from Red baron, who were selling it on behalf of the owner for WAY too much. It was nowhere near as tidy as yours, and was also a Jap import (but not a restricted version).

That's a very uncommon paintjob on yours - really stands out from some of the other colours like the Italian Red.

The bike has been serviced at Red Baron, which is where it got the sticker from.
She needs a bit of work coming up (service, pads, tyres etc)
Where is the best place to go?
I was thinking of taking it back to RB as they have the service history etc, but if there is a better place, I would love to know.

a better place would be anywhere but red baron...

goto mt eden motorcycles they will look after you and not shaft you moneywise....

they buy in alot more bulk than red baron...thus better prices.

oh and bungys the one to talk to about tyres....

he can recommend you the best rubber to put on etc....and give you the price....

it's a top shop which is why i keep going back where as red baron couldnt care provided they make a buck.
