On the Dunedin Ride on the Catlins Coastal Route, Free2be on front, botb and CB behind.

Lamb1 runs down a bank and crosses road just after Free2be gets past it, no worries.

Lamb2 (the brainlesser one) runs down the bank, scurries out to follow Lamb1, I notice it, brake real hard and scrub off loads of speed and aim to miss its bum by inches as it runs across the road.

    Only it doesn't.

It suddenly stops right where I'm pointed, fark, more brake pressure, like tons - and try to crank some lean to the right to avoid lamb

Suddenly front wheel is locked up, bike starting to low-side, foot hits the road after getting knocked off free-way peg - thing are looking grim and I'm sure my elbow is inches from the road.

Exhaust is grinding and aforementioned foot gets swept back under exhaust, by now I've almost resigned to not recovering from this slide and think "oooh shee-it, this is going to hurt' but at the last split second I released the brake a bit, instinctively push down with my right foot and hey-presto, we're upright again.

Only now Im on the wrong side of the road and pointed diagonally across to the gravel verge - and just to add some spice there's some tourist coming towards me in a camper van!

A last ditch effort to gain control and sloww a bit before I hit the gravel verge and ta-dah! the van goes by as I run along the gravel verge on his side of the road towards him. (probabaly thought 'frkkn crazy kiwis').

So I come to a stop, hand sweaty, knee as sore-as, toe of steel-capped boot severely gouged and heel peeled off it a tad - and CB and botb pretty rattled.

Lesson: Watch it on the Catlins Coastal Route, particularly at this time of year with the lambs about - they haven't learned the 'rules' yet.

And oh, the chicken strip thing? The right side of my front tyre was scuffed to the edge of the tread for the full 360 degress of its circumference!!!

And my zorst has some gnarly road rash in place you wouldn't believe.
    Pics or it didn't happen

Crikey Scummy that's a close call, glad you lived to tell the tale

I guess we'll be asking Quasi to make pants with knee sliders AND tassles for future ref.

1 question though - if it had been a copper rather than a tourist in a camper van oncoming do you think they would have swallowed your story of animal avoidance for that dangerous maneouvre?

Yep, they possibly would have seen the same lambs if they had looked to their right rather than at me.

And there were three positive witnesses riding with me.
