    Auckland Bike Parking. Questions

    I am arguing with ACC abouit bike parking (see other threads).

    I'd like some input.

    Assume that you DON'T or CAN"T park in a "cage" car park, and ignoring parking buildings and parking lots . ie, focus just on street parking.

    The list of official bike street parks can be found here

    Most of them are in the central city, and the majority are at the University (still not enough there , I know)

    Outside the central city/Uni area , I reckon

    Grey Lynn 3 places
    Mt Eden 8 places
    Newton 7 places
    Otahuhu 2 places
    Newmarket 10 places

    (converting the council metres into places at the official rate of 1.2 metres per bike)

    The Uni has, on paper 125 places . But there are trees along Symonds street that use up some of the space, so realistically 100 places. And about 87 in the rest of the central city.

    Now, what I want to know is ,
    what other areas need bike parks ?(yes, I know, everywhere. But where is the pain BAD). And roughly how many ?

    Also, I reckon that lots of small areas (say 4 bikes ? ) is better than a few big ones ? Yes ? Except at the Uni . Are there any other areas where a really big bike area is needed ?

    Second question.

    Who can identify "waste" space that could be allocated for bike parking. Enough room for say 3 or 4 bikes? That isn't at present cage parking and where bike parking would be sensible and not inconvenience people (Yes, I know, miles and miles of footpath. But I'm looking for specific sites)

    Good on you for putting your money where your mouth is on this one and doing some hard work for the masses. Hope it all goes as smoothly as bureaucracy allows.

    Queen street is probably the biggie. The parking buildings fill up real quick. Even the parking buildings where bike space is allocated is always full...

    I had the gixer and parked up in a building, moved all the scooters so they were close together to make room...parking warden snapped me and I said, I want to park a real bike, so helped me move them....(bet the owners were annoyed as no one could get to their scooter)

    Any street which runs off Queen street for about a block or two is where parking should be allowed at least footpath parking...or something...

    Those back one way streets....not sure if anything could be done there, but being sometimes isolated roads, the risk of bikes getting stolen could increase.

    Ponsonby Road - I park at different spots along that road..... I sure dont want a bike spot stuck down at the 3 lamps area to have to trudge carrying all my bike gear (in the heat or pissing down rain) all the way up to the other end.
    (BUT we do need one right outside the foodcourt cos I park the bike up for at least an hour there - you know where you came to my rescue)

    K' Rd - again the same reason as above....

    Queen St - again same reason as above....... (that is a hell of a steep hill if the bike park is at the bottom and you want to go to the top)

    I am sure that there are many other places around the Auckland City area that others could mention.


    I guess we need lots of bike parks dotted all over the place.... not just one bike park in each road.

    Otherwise let us park on the footpath but out of the way of the pedestrians.

    Bike parks are a great idea in the city centre if you have them every 50m or so but I'm not sure they work in the suburban centres like Mt Eden or Kingsland. Firstly they'd be empty most of the time and secondly they'd be nowhere near the shop you were going to etc.

    Allowing bikes to park on the footpath unless obstructing foot traffic would make far more sense and leave more parking spaces (already in short supply) for the cages.

    It dosen't have to be "large" amounts of parking for bikes. If there is space for even one bike, paint the lines on the road and put a little motorcycle symbol on it.
    If these were implemented all over the place (wherever they would fit) it would allow more bikes to park without having to "disadvantage" the cage-driving unkulturny.
    Even better is also converting cage parking spaces every 100 metres to allow 5-6 bikes room to park instead of one person in a cage.

    With the parking on the parnell side (engineering side) of symonds st as it is, you only get a few bikes in, i couldnt park the gn in there last time because it just rolled down the slope with the mainstand dangling in the air (huge pot holes)

    Could do with parking at the bottom end of queenstreet, as well as a few more on the skytower side, elliot street is pretty bad, often cars park in the mc bay and the domino's guys from across the road park their delivery scooters there too, leaving only a wee bit of space

    A birdy told me you might have a date for a meeting with the council or Manager of parking, blahblahblah (he's has had mail from me... ), does my birdy need its hearing checked? (pm please)

    Will go hunt out these other bike parks tomorrow, see how many are accessible/usable still...
