Owners of nice bikes who can't ride

I've raced the latest super bikes, however I ride a old 89 ZXR750 on the road and never get off it wishing I had something new n flash. I've seen people riding old bikes sneering self righteously at new bike riders and I've seen new bike riders look down their noses at me on my old bike. They are missing the point me thinks. Bikes are wonderful devices to set your spirit free, why "cage" it up in a ego.

interesting how some people feel they have to shoot others down over things like this. normally they are trying to cover their own inadequacies, or they are just nobs.
I can tell you rite now the next bike on my radar will be way to good for me and my skill level. Really don’t care to be honest, people are more then welcome to talk / laugh behind my back … as I ride off on my brand new 600.

It's funny how people will insult either the rider or their bike, and yes, this often is to make themselves feel better.

You may take it to heart and wonder if there's any truth in what that person's just said. When you look at your bike, which makes your knees wobble and your heart pound, you'll realise that no one can take away the euphoria that you get from riding it and any memories of people's negativity will disappear.

Changing the topic slightly - even the nicer bikes I was able to buy years after my very first bike never were quite as smile-inducing as the RV90!

So if your not a fast biker why would you buy a fast bike?

People have covered this, but it is very niave to think that the sole performance paramter of a 'fast' bike is speed. I have owned several bikes over 20 yrs - currently a GSX600 whilst the last recently was an RG150. Both use the same gas pretty much and cost about the same to service. The GSX does many things the RG cannot, such as tour 2-up and all day - and many things much easier thanks to the large & lazy torque well. Potential is much more than speed.
But it is nice to be able to overtake a milk truck in the hills by ringing in for a quick 180kph (not that I would officer!), even though this would be very rare.

I used to play hockey and had the best DFV at the time.
Now in my later 30s I am thinking of playing a little. Will I buy the best stick? Absolutely! Will I use it to its potential - nah. But it will make it easier for me - and I can plain CAN.

Another analogy for you here - I ride enduro mountain bike + XC. I don't do it much anymore, and recently some friends my age have got into it too as a once-a-month thing. The 'best' bikes make it easy - for me and beginners. I have been blown away on technical and long (160k +) trails by people on single-speeds who are gifted masochistic riders. They use the full potential of what they have. I tap my ride's potential and it masks my inadequacies. And why not?

There is no real argument for taking a small 2-stroke over a larger bike if this is your choice. And just if you want to own "the best of something" then why not?

If perceived image is the reason you want to purchase a particular bike, then that makes you the poseur. When I ride, I ride for my own enjoyment at my own pace (whatever that may be) and I could not give a flying fuck what others may think regardless of what bike I may choose to own. The moment you start riding to "impress" your mates or show off to other road users, you enter a very dangerous zone.




Why not? That would be totally cool by me!

If you're not fussed by what others think of you, then why direct so much at those who have different riding values to you. Eg: Stunters?

Could you improve on an absolute hunk of shit? No, not really. I am an instrumentalist (cello) and until a little while ago i thought i was at the end of my talent because it was sounding shit. After trialing a new cello it was the crap cello not the crap me, so i am upgrading the instrument as it was that or quit which i did not want to do. sure i will not sound one hell of a lot better for a while but hay i will get there.

newest looks coool but i have always liked cutting up people in race suits on a new model sports bike when i have my old black leathers and a several model old bike. Its great fun. Then i stop for a chat and a laugh with them about it. I find people with a NEW bike generally ride it at 8/10 and leave a bigger margin for safety where mine is old and i dont mind another scratch or 2.
New or Old fast or slow who cares? Its all bikeing eh

My opinion is that it is far safer to have a bike that you can't get anywhere near it's potential on the road rather than a bike you can easily exceed it's potential.
Mrs Nudie feels far safer riding the Guzzi V11 than the VT250 despite there being 70-80 kg's more. Better suspension, better brakes, better tyres, says it all really.

Oh yeah. My SV weighs the same as my old GS, and has twice the HP. Shame it's not quite twice as fast.
