Also did anyone else notice that in quite a few places (coming down off the sumit road especially from memory) that there was lots of tar comming through. Is there anyone you can complain to about this, ideally someone who will listen, and do something about it.

The Chch city council is the road controlling authority for the the area. Not a good chance of getting anything done about it though. Remember that there are no certainties with road condition so ride to the conditions. One day you may find gravel etc on the road - this has the potential to make the bled bitumen (what its called when the bitumen (haven't used tar for years) comes to the surface) easy to ride.

I think I'll have to drag myself along to one of these rides to keep TA's DR company and get some good oil on road riding.

Yep good ride tonight, Not a bad place on a nice evening for a beer. Was tail end charlie on the way home for a while, saw a couple of mid corner "freezes" and a near miss with armco. Speed comes with time -ride within your ability, if the dude in front is going to fast , who cares.......Not cool picking bikes out of ditches.

yea it was a great ride, nearly killed myself on the way back, but thats half the fun!
Hope we get this good turnout every week during the christmas break.

no its not half the fun ,a good fun ride is safe and coming home upright. speed comes with time.

Making major errors while riding is not something to joke about. One day one of those errors will be too major. You need to think about why you're making mistakes and why you're running wide. Maybe you're out riding you're abilities at this stage. Theres no need to speed. Everyone that comes on these rides know that it's meant to be a cruisy ride. Noone is going to pressure you to go faster and if they want to go faster then they can pass you.

Don't worry about going fast. Concentrate on your lines and riding smoothly. With smoothness and ideal lines comes speed.

You start off slow and when you get quicker and cocky you start to push youir luck. (before you are ready)

And if unlucky it can and will turn to shit fast..........

Many of you probably don't know me but hopefully this post adds something to this thread for you to think about.

I am one of the people that Lemans talks of. I got my full in Nov 06 and got meself a DR650. I did a bit of adventure riding with Transalper and others on this site. Come Good Friday (6th April) this year I was heading through the Rainbow with Transalper and Plug and having a blast riding faster through there than I have ever done before (been through about 4 times on the bike by that stage). I had the key for a locked gate and after opening it the others rode on leaving me to lock the gate.

I locked it and then pushed it too hard trying to catch up. I ended up in a ditch having gone over the handle bars. Long story short I broke my C1 vertebra among other things which, is fatal or if you are lucky like me then you are OKish - no in between i.e. paralyzed. I was in a neck brace for 6 weeks. I still feel things grind and the occasional pinched muscle.

Simply I got to cocky and pushed things to hard and paid the price. Ride the pace you are comfortable with. If you try to keep up or show of there is a good chance you will stack it and the price of stacking is not worth it.

Nuf said.

Was it you guys coming up to the Lyttleton tunnel roundabout just around 8:50 pm? I heard a lot of bikes coming through when we sat on the boat having a beer and yarn after the race last night.

Anyway, it looks as if I might rejoin you guys again in 2 weeks time - something about the boat races being off over Christmas or something like it.

In the meantime - do listen to D and the other old timers, and try your VERY best to stay alive.
Binning is bad... mkay! and headbutting the bullbars on a 4WD coming downhill by poking your head over the line is going to hurt!

actually my intent was to have him pop in front of you but still be behind me, not to blast off in to the distance out on your own. How many weeks has he been on the road again?

Hes only had the bike for maybe 5-6 wks and he was just a wee way ahead

I'm really pleased with how hes going so far,but yeah I really want him to follow you guys too

Although I personally dislike that section of the summit road I thoroughly enjoyed the ride, it was a great turn out.

I will stay quite about the Fobin's admission of a near bin enough has been said here already.

Karla you did well and comments were made both here and to you personally to this effect, one thing I will add is at no point did you attempt out ride you knowledge and ability's, this is a good thing to see .

Thanks to all who came, I think we got the directions sorted well at the start, it was nice to come down Gebbies and see everyone waiting at the Weatsheath. I suspect the poor folks a Godley house were a tad shocked to see so many of us turn up.

I will miss next week due to work so you wont have to put up with my loud voice at the start, but in the interests of having a good, safe ride would someone be kind enough to help Pheonixgtr give out the directions, he really does not have a loud enough voice.

Not a big fan of that section of road myself. If it was a bit wider and had a much better surface it'd be so much fun, but the fact is it's simply a goat track - rough, bumpy, off camber, gravel everywhere, narrow, blind corners everywhere... not to mention cages coming the other way on the wrong bloody side of the road!!

Well I like the Summit Rd.

But ride it to fast and it will bite and bite hard.

As a road it can be a challenge and challengers are good as they teach you to ride better and to the conditions.

If you only ride on good wide smooth fast roads, that's all you will be able to ride.

Heheh reminds me... If you're going from Sign of the Kiwi/Dyer's Pass along the Summit Road to Mt. Pleasant Road - on the righthander just before you come to Mt. Pleasant Rd. there are currently a couple of markings on the road indicating the wheel tracks of a car that went over the side! ...and if you look into the paddock you can see where the car landed and continued a bit.

But yeah, I think that the Summit Road is a nice road as well. You just have to be very very careful since there can be cyclists, runners, sheep, sunday drivers, stock effluent and gravel around every corner.
