Hope you had a great xmas all...

Xaria, Free2b and I just got back from Milford Sound... did the full Southern Scenic Route (from Waihola) to the Catlins (and down to Curio Bay and back), Invercargill, (including Bluff), Tuatapere, Manapouri, to Milford Sound yesterday... and then back through Lumsden, Queenstown Alexandra, Ranfurly Middlemarch to Dunedin today... (total of about 1400 kms)

Rained going in to Milford, and poured going out till about Te Anau... and then fine till we hit Middlemarch turn off... then wind and a few spot showers... and then the rain and wind and rain just after Middlemarch till we got home...

Caught up with OutbackAl in cromwell had a coffee... (Thanx for the hospitality)

Over all was a good couple of days, though next time we plan on doing it with a couple of more days so it won't be so rushed. an dhave more time to do the photo thing...

    Smile Great travel companion

    Hi all,
sounds like you've all had some great rides lately, I saw the same biker twice on the weekend, once going toward dunedin, and the second not surprisingly coming back from dunedin, with what looked like a Staffie bull terrier type dog in a leather bag on his tank. what a great idea and i bet the dog loves it. didnt catch what kinda bike he was on just saw it was black. hope you all have safe new years.

Sounds like you've had a great trip - if you do feel like getting out again tomorrow we're planning on leaving here between 11-12am and aiming for Roxburgh for lunch, then maybe either Tapanui or Lawrence for a coffee on the way back. Got a few things I have to do in the morning so have ruled out a big ride. We could meet up in Lawrence or here if anyone is keen.

I "found" a great bit of motorcycle road very near Dunedin today that I didn't know existed (and I was in the car so I haven't ridden it yet) - go up Law Rd (the really steep one that comes out onto SH1 at the corner opposite the East Taieri Golf course) - when you get to the top turn left and head back to Fairfield along the top - all sealed and with nice corners and some great views. If you guys already knew about it then you should be spanked for not sharing!!

Headed out there this evening just for the sake of going for a ride. Have to make sure you go left at the top instead of right or it turns to gravel pretty quick. Little bit of loose stuff on the climb up Law Rd but the rest of it is cool fun

Is that the road that goes up behind that Lockwood house?

Well you've beaten me to it - I'm heading to Dunedin on Frid am to start a trip and if I can leave a bit earlier I'll deviate up that hill.
And yes if you turn right instead of left it does turn to gravel very quickly - I see there is a dry weather only road/track down the hill to Allanton which I will investigate another day, the main gravel road comes out at Brighton.

    This thread's gone a bit quiet ??!!

Its been a while since anyone posted on here - what have you been up to ?? The weather was great over this last weekend so I'm sure we weren't the only ones out there.

We (Delphinus and me plus pillion) headed off on Friday to Otematata - but the route added another couple of hundred Kms. It was quite windy on my way into Dn on Frid morning so we decided on the Pig Root rather than Middlemarch, had lunch in Ranfurly (where we chatted to a couple of fellas on their way to a BMW gathering in Alexandra) and then on to Jantars place for a coffee and catch up.

Oldrider had decided to meet us there rather than Cromwell (he'd got to Cromwell too early - that bloody MPH speedo fools him still !!). When we arrived Jantar had the big V STrom sitting outside looking like it was ready to go - it was - "Bruce - leave your gear on and take my bike for a ride - it hasn't been out of the shed for months" - well its a dirty job but someone had to........
Good luck with getting that shoulder sorted Malcolm - its a great bike waiting for you.

From there it was a simple matter of over the Lindis and down to Otematata - via the Kawerau Gorge, Crown Range, Wanaka........
After a really enjoyable night with Mr and Mrs OR we headed away mid am and Oldrider came with us and guided us round the canal roads - I didn't realize there were 5 Power stations above Lake Benmore. A spectacular day, brilliant weather, no clouds so after lunch at Twizel we rode up to Mt Cook.

One particular long straight section of canal road was too tempting to one nameless biker whose speedo briefly saw a 3 digit number and the first two numbers were not zero or one!

We parted company with Oldrider the other side of Tekapo as he headed home via the Haka. It was bloody hot (my pillion cured this with a wet T shirt swim in Tekapo and had that on under her riding jacket!) and there were lots of sections of road on the way through to Geraldine and up through Canterbury where the tar was melting quite badly - it gave me one slight twitchy moment and was treated with a lot more caution after that. Take care up there if it rains anytime soon.

We stayed with friends near Windwhistle and Delphinus carried on to ChCh and I hear he had a good play around the hills the next day but he can tell that story.
Cool overcast ride home with the "end of a great trip Blues" setting in the nearer to home you get as the real world sends its tentacles out to greet you!!
All up about 1300-1400 kms, fantastic scenery, great roads and great KB company. The most expensive fuel was $1:89 at Tekapo - its going to get worse so get out there and get your share!!

A most enjoyable weekend it was too.
Stayed saturday night at helenoftroy's house, and arrived to find Lemans and SDU there already eating bbq. After making the most of the great hospitality, the next morning headed to over to Akaroa with the above 3 to enjoy the twisty roads. Plenty of tourist traffic but we got through that pretty easily, then after a nice brunch, came back via the top road. Great relaxed ride
Decided I better start heading south, so cranked the mp3 player for the straight road south. Thankfully there was plenty of traffic on the road to make it a wee bit more interesting
Got a wee bit cold around Timaru so threw a few extra layers on but kept heading steadily south to get home safely ready for... work the next day.

Just over 1600kms added to the odo, at this rate I'll be needing yet another oil change already!

Well..all I can say is CB and I went to Kaka Point on the bikes on New Years day...now awaiting the arrival of two new rear tyres - and work has taken care of a lot of my 'spare' time anyway.

Bought some biker cooking gear at Khatmandu sale so will be able to cook meals at rallies from now on. (Thanks for hints'n'ideas Mr S.!)

    Roll on the Woodstock Rally!!

Good to hear you have all been getting out. Missed out on a ride invite due to the pecularities of txt reception at Aramoana-didn't know of any others. Gazed wistfully at the bikes at the Careys Bay pub. Nearly waved to a couple until i remembered i was on a push bike! No riding since the Stagiing Post and now back to work on Friday

Here, Here! And a big Thank you to Jantar for showing us through the Clyde Dam. A very interesting morning. I met Tim (Phaedrus) looking much like Jantar actually (& his dad) in Naseby last night, recuperating from his near Death experience.
