    Nearly busted for flashing

(No NOT that sort); Coming back from Hamilton to Tauranga in the company Subaru this arvo, 5.00pm'ish, encountered the 1st cop, unmarked, and allowed him to pass me coming into Cambridge. Next cop detected on predictable Karapiro straights, the Escort 8500 picking him up in heaps of time. Up the hill and around the bend, and I turn left, as you do, on to the Hinuera straights. As I turn left, another Patrol Car slots in behind me from the Rotorua direction, no drama's, the cruise control set for 100, - they use me as a bit of a shield, the Patrol car hugging the left (I'm dead centre of the left lane), and every time an oncoming car appears, I hear a burst of radar thru the detector - as you'd expect.

I flashed a few cars as they appeared in the distance, to give them a sporting chance... as I'd hope someone would for me.......then WHOOPS, spot an unmarked blue Maxima among the oncoming bunch - BUGGER, nothing happens, so carry on - almost predictably, 2 minutes later, the Patrol car following me pulls me over and has me on. She was PISSED and had an attitude! - clearly Mr Maxima was on the RT to her! I had a vague excuse "geez, I hit the wipers, must've got the wrong stalk" - anyway after much droning (her) she gave me a smack-on-the-hand for "Inappropriate use of headlights" which will be recorded in case I do it again. (Not that I admitted it)

I guess the 3 minutes of being humble, saved me the $150 fine she kept going on about. Boy did she want her pound of flesh!

From there I saw at least 3 more patrol cars, - but of course, -------- the end of the month looms, - get out there Guys and start writing some revenue!

Felt sorry for the Thurs night crew spotted coming up the other side of the kaimais!!

    Ah flashit-gnashit!

I flash my headlights at cars all the time at random out on the road.

Sometimes I do it in my work car too.

    Good on you scummy.

I recall a case some years back where a motorist was charged with "Obstructing a constable in the execution of his duty" for flashing his lights at oncoming cars.

He defended it and was found "Not Guilty". His defence was that he didn't obstruct any police officer as there was no evidence that any of the cars he flashed were speeding, and therefore the police officer had no reason to give any of a speeding ticket.

As I recall, his lawyer challenged the prosecuting witness ( I think it was the officer concerned) to name, or identify, a single motorist who was speeding, but reduced his/her speed to below the limit because of being flashed, and to say what that person's speed was before being flashed and after. Then in summary the proposition was put to the judge "If my client does see someone who is doing wrong, is it an offense to tell them to stop doing it?"

    The case was dismissed.

A similar case in Rotorua around the same time saw the defendant plea guilty.

I believe I would defend such a charge.

Yeah, I kinda stumbled into this thread thinking wtf???? Cut a long story short, fines suck, good on you for warning other drivers and wise to take a spanking for the sake of a potential fine.

I find a genuine sounding sorry and a shut mouth normally works better with a frazzled copper than coming out all atitude.

Nothing works on me - my 'loser-liar' alert device cuts in as soon as they open their mouth.....

And if they use the words "I was just.." - they're screwed.
