    Beware. Frame sliders.

i brought a new bike last year in hamilton which was fitted with frame slidders. the frame sliders where made by a guy in hamilton also.
the guy has since pasted away,
however the frame slidder broke off in my hand, the bike was still upright on the stand, aparently its a design fault.(a known one)
i just wish i was warned of this happening, the dealer has my details and i have spoken to him a few times since i brought the bike. and nothing was mentioned.
if you have these slidders you will know what im on about, just beware they may do the same and not work as well as you thort.
i dont want to mention names or cause a fuss, just beware.

Interesting,i spend a heap of internet time on another overseas based bike forum and over the years have read many threads about frame sliders/bobbins etc that have done more harm than good in an off, sure they have protected some plastics but at the expense of a naffed frame.

Um, ok, so just for the simple folk out there (me) how exactly would I know if I have these same frame sliders?
Presumably as mine haven't broken off in my hand I guess I don't.

Choose Oggy knobs. They cost a bomb - but work. I slid my Hornet down the road a few weeks ago, Oggy Knobs stopped it from being an insurance write off. Apart from protecting the bike and minimising damage, the Oggy knobs are also designed to grind away. This grinding prevents the Oggy knob from catching on the road's surface and flipping the bike or bending the frame (unlike cheap knock offs).

My Oggy Knob lost 1-2cms from being ground down!

I got my crash knobs from www.rapidartnz.com and they worked a treat in my recent off. The frame did not touch the ground at all, even the radiator was untouched. The knob itself was ground down about 20mm and the securing bolt was slightly bent. They were not stunningly cheap to buy but worth every cent when it counted, although to be fair I wouldn't be able to vouch for how they would work in a high speed off. Every accident is different I guess.

thanks for all your help... im finding it hard to trust n.z made stuff in general, im not sure theres enough testing done on the products. especialy after the last sliders. it seems the buyers do the testing, id like somebody else to do it. i pay good money i expect a good product.
no hard feelings but iv been mucked around by bayride to many times,on more than one ocasion. ill never go back there, long story.
however i got two quotes for oggys at $400. and have just found a price on a n.z site for half that. ill have to check they have it right, it seems hard to believe.

Fair enough re Bayride. Chris has just started there recently and I don't believe him to be the type to muck around at all.

Let us know how you get on with that pricing. Would be keen on a price like that!
