Smile Parking your motorcycle on the street in Auckland - here is how it works.

Ok, today I was parking on Karangahape Road in the pay and display area. just got off the bike and saw a parking warden. Good chance to ask a few questions I taught. Here is our conversation:

Hey there, ive parked in the 60 minutes pay and display area. Is that ok or should I park on the footpath ?

No no, you are fine there. Its NOT allowed to park on the footpath in Auckland.

Do I need to buy a ticket ?

If you are parked here (60 min pay and display area), as you are, for 10 to 20 minutes you dont need to pay. If you are staying for the whole 60 minutes, pay for the ticket and put it in your pocket for pease of mind. If a traffic officer comes along and issues you a fine you will get it by mail. Just give a call to the head office and quite the number of the ticket you have paid for and it will be cleared. In reality we do not issue fines to bikes in a pay and display area if they stay for the specified amount of time.

So even if I dont pay and stay for the whole 60 minutes that will be OK ? (I say in disbelief)

YES. But you will get a fine if you exeed the specified limit which in your case here is 60 min by more than 10 min.

O great, thanks so much for that.

    You are most wellcome.

    Have a nice day.

    Ride Safe, bye.

What a nice guy. So there you have it falks straight from the horses mouth. Just goes to show that you can get valuable info in a nice manner if you are just nice to people.

Not on the footpath owned by the council

Many buildings boundries extend out onto the footpath so you can park there.

Pay and display on K'rd...is that by the cemetary? Why not just park on the grass, then its not on the footpath or in the pay and display area.

Hmmm, Good to hear that response though...although if it's not written down I'd be questioning it....another parking officer might have a different opinion.
They never seem to be very consistent.

"Mr Eds" interpratation of the rules is probably just one of many, but I agree it was an interesting conversation.

Yes, I heard the same thing regarding Pay and Display parking spaces via a warden in Parnell. Just park there and don't worry about the ticket, but don't go over-time.

I took his advice with a grain of salt though, as he was more interested in my bike `you put DROP bars on it -- tha's fookin grouse, tha is... ye noo, back an Eeeeedinbooorough ma Dad used tae ha' a BEEEZER....'

I can confirm that it is ACC policy not to seek payment for motorcycles in a Pay and Display PROVIDED that

    1. The motorcycle is parked as reasonably as possible - end on to the kerb so several bikes can share a park
    2. There is not a council parking building or dedicated bike park within 'reasonable' distance. I guess 'reasonable' is open to variable interpretation.

It's an interesting one - in many cases, the road rules apply to a road defined as an area to which the public have access, whether as of right or not (or something similar). So perhaps you're not even allowed to park on a footpath in your own front garden, unless you have a gate?

Before anyone tries, please remember that there are multiple types of machines.

Some machines dispense tickets i.e. Pay & Display. I assume that these machines are the ones covered by the advice in the original post - since there is nowhere to put a ticket on a motorbike.

However some machines take payment for a specific parking spot (which you select on the machines). I assume that these machines are not covered by the advice - since there is no ticket to display.

Some building owners will now tow bikes. I know the Gen-I building in the Auckland CBD has stopped allowing bikers to park outside around the perimeter.
