Yep I been nailed for it, in my car. I was late for work and was trying to bully people out of my way (which was working) til I got behind a mufti.. he moved then after I went past he turned his lights on. Pretty red and blue ones. That cost me 80 fricken dollars. I have tailgated since....
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them

"Don't be a fool, use the 2 second rule", or sumfing like that.
It may be gay, but it works! And if someone fills the gap, just drift further back - saved myself from a couple of heinous motorway multi nose to tailers, doing that. - It's also interesting seeing just how many cars cram into a 2 second gap at 100 k........

Funny shit is, bikers are the worst offenders for tailgating. I see more bikes tucked in behind cars than cars in proportion to the usage of each. Me included. I catch myself all the time tucking into an exhaust pipe waiting for the next gap and "tailgating tosser" does go through my mind...for a couple of seconds before the gap comes and my goldfish brain starts thinking about pussy again...and tucking into another exhaust pipe

As for cops, they only pull over people doing between 110 and 115 and leave all other offences alone...taligating, not keeping over to the left and driving below 80 dont seem to count and they aint capable of driving above 115 to catch the fun speeds.

Many, many moons ago some of my fellow apprentices and I were on holiday at my folks in Wanganui.

On the return journey North we took to souveniring roadwork signs. (VC Valiant......big boot.)

Coming in to Hamilton, the local MOT lad pulls my mate up for "following too closely". He asks my mate if he has his license.

"Oh yeah. It's in my bag in the boot."

The look on his face as soon as those words had formed was farkin' hilarious.

I agree, oblivious to who is patrolling said area, and obviously the 2 cars you passed weren't interested either. Pretty bad!

I think you are right, bikes can be pretty bad for it - always looking for that next bunny hop to get further up the road.....
Tailgating really annoys me when it happens to me and while agree it's pretty damned dangerous I don't really see how enforceable it would be (a) due to more "important" things up the priority list and (b) the hassle of getting witnesses to back up your complaint since no accident was actually caused by said personal space invasion (this especially in light of the fact that even when cops witness it being done they don't necessarily do anything about it).

A few weeks ago I was driving the car and being tailgated by some woman in a red Holden, we were going 100-110km/h on the motorway. There was traffic so she couldn't get past and I couldn't go faster or move to the other lane to let her past, and she was following so close I couldn't even see her headlights, just the bonnet! So I tapped my brakes, and what does she do?? Pulls the finger at me! As if I was the one in the wrong!!

Two of us both with pillions had a mainfreight truck and tralier unit about two metres behind us we were travelling at 110k's no good slowing down so we turned off the Atiamuri highway to Rotorua just to lose the prick the American lass age 69 was in tears, wife and I were real pissed also.

At Paeroa saw truck and tralier unit parked (MF) so pulled over to have a yarn with the mutt but alas wrong number plate, but told him of our experience any way..

Followed proceedure went to the police got the form filled it out only to have a woman from Taupo police two months later asking me why we were tailgating the truck (FM)

So after telling the story again to make sure she had it right, she got the truck driver who denied tailgateing but did addmitt to travelling at 98k's an hour, we were told as no wittnesses saw this happen the police could do nothing again (FFS)..

Shall leave it there as this happens a lot...

I know I've done it, maybe because on a bike all the open space makes you think your not that close, or you can go round or something. I rear ended a big ass 4x4 on the way to work, he had no brake lights and by the time I figured out he was stopped it was to late. He didn't even notice !! All the people in cars just sat there and watched as I picked myself up and pushed the bike to the side of the road, no one gave a f&%k !!!
