We have dozens of these "things" crawling around our front deck at the moment. They are a brown revolting looking caterpiller dragging around a cocoon of some sort. They climb up to the roof of our deck and hang there. Then when you least expect it these things drop to the floor looking for all the world like a broken stick. They are in all sizes but this one is 90mm long.

I have a very unhealthy fear of moths (what ever that is called) and would hate to think this is going to hatch and become mothra!

    Any ideas?
HOW COOL! You found my willy. The last time I saw it it was in a coffee mug, cheers mate!

Your OK Mom, it looks like the common bagmoth and the best clue is the shrub /tree behind it in the picture.

We used to spend a lot of time squeezing these when we were kids.

It must have been a good season for them.

I would like to blame the Labour party but not even I can blame them for that! Cheers John.

No. I might have tried one with marmite. I was rather keen on Marmite. You can't roast them either, they just shrivel up.

I have a morbid curiosity for surgery (ex nurse and all that) so the vid probably would have been ok!

Moths on the other hand are not OK... they are so horrible, I cant even cope with little tiny ones that flutter around.

Ok so it is a MOTH, and may or may not turn out to be a brain eating mothra that is going to come get me? How big do these MOTHS get? I am in no hurry to meet one on a dark night with a bit of light around the place. And yes obviously a good season for them. Tree hugging me will be getting rid of the habitat as soon as possible...LOL

Oh, yes, it's a mof. A pretty big one once they hatch. But quite harmless. Just leave 'em alone, they'll do you no harm. Just a bit annoying if they get caught in y' hair n' such like.

Try Nedwyns suggestion, see how they taste with jam. Could be a rad new sandwich filling.

Just think of it as a butterfly that got hit with the ugly stick. Sort of Lepidopterae equivalent of Frau Helen.

Butterflies do not come and flap around your face in the dark, when you can not reach a light switch to find out what it is that is fluttering on your face, in the dark of a cabin shared by.......*shudder*

Actually butterflies I can do at a distance, dont want them too close though, they have powder on their wings too! I did say it was

Ah. So you wouldn't be too much into bats , then?

Very misunderstood little fellows the bats. Warm, furry, cuddly, really just kittens with wings. And mostly harmless unless youa re an insect.

Actually , there's a *great* idea. Get a few bats to lurk around the bedroom n such. They'll eat the mofs, and all good.
