They go at that time because the human body clock is slowest at 2-3am. Slowest reaction times etc. It supposed to minimise the risk of exactly what happened.

Thoughts to the dead officers family, tragic news.I say give the cops fucken tanks if that's what it takes,by and by the worlds turning into a pretty shitty place and it seems ludicrous that these guys have to deal with shitheads on a daily basis armed with a vest, baton and fingers crossed that the next person they deal with isnt some p head intent on killing the world. They are fighting our fight so why not at least put them on an equal footing.

they always have, tl - t's just that the goal posts have shifted so far towards the bad guys that the cops are always on the back foot.

to plant a tracking device needs a high court order. planting of them happens reasonably frequently (if you are interesting enough) and is always one of the highest risk jobs - involves much sneaking around and basically being a 'bad guy'. the risks are huge - there is no requirement of the bad guys to follow any protocol, they don't have to answer to kangaroo court, or to the likes of keith locke. they are not limited to batons, then spray, then taser, then guns. will protect their patch with deadly force in the first instance.

RIP and my thoughts to the family

For those that cannot/will not understand:

The police officers did NOT "go into" this house.

They were on the exterior fitting a tracking device to a vehicle, well away from the dwelling.

    Someone is dead.

Criticise their methods AFTER the family have had a chance to mourn their loss.

IIRC a district court order is sufficient.

that's what the Herald says, but I thought it was a HC judge - maybe that's just for an Interception Warrant.

    Clip from the news:

Police said although neither of the two policemen shot was armed, there were armed police nearby for support.

"Sadly, the situation unfolded so quickly that they were unable to intervene to help their colleagues,' Mr Cox said.

Before the operation the property and occupants were the subject of a full risk assessment.

"There was nothing to indicate any undue risk to staff."

Details of the two policemen had yet to be released.

I wonder if the killers realised that the guys they were chasing were cops ? They were plain clothes. And I guess, given that there's some sort of covert operation going on, the cops would probably have preferred the baddies to think they were just a couple of punks trying to steal the car.

Not saying it makes any odds either way, nasty folk willing to gun anyone down like that.

Well, yes, but it was after all supposed to be a COVERT operation. They didn't want the gang to know they were "the subject of attention". Having a bunch of cops hanging around is a good way to make the crims figure something is going on. And pulling a gun and shouting "Police" if you get caught in the act is an even better way.

I don't suppose the cops actually expected the gang to come out shooting - it's a bit extreme even for them. And, absent the guns, a couple of punks try to steal a car, and at worst get bashed up by the car's owners, the operation is not comprimised.

As far as planning goes... plan for the worst, take a .45. As you say, they're fucked up P heads, they were hardly going to be happy about people snooping around their pad... given the money that revolves around P, it's a good bet that they're going to be armed in some way. Sadly, I can't help but thinking how much of a waaaaaah the bleeding heart liberals would've been having had the nice officers put a bullet through the skulls of these wankers.
