For those of you going for an exemption..

Well I used KB as a great resoruce while applying for my exemption from the 250cc rule on my 6R - Reason being too tall (6'5"). So i figured i would give my experience.

Will give a run through for those of who are thinking about going for it.

Fill out a form in my local AA stating my case and payed my $22.

About 10 days later got a letter saying that they need more info to complete my application
    - what bike i intended to ride (including licence plate) Even though i said in my intial letter i was unsure of what bike to get as i was unable to test ride any, So i guess this is a generic letter.
    - Photos of me on a 250cc bike and on a bike thats greater than 250cc. (doesnt say your own bike so go into a shop and hop on the smallest 250 you can find)
    - Riding experience.
    - medical certificate stating my height and weight

Also they said that you wont get accepted on a bike that isnt on the list ( they didnt even supply a list) so I applyed for an exemption on a ER6n.

    That brings us to today.
Got a letter saying that i was delcinded because the bike wasnt on the list and the bikes on the list can accomodate taller people so tough shit.

So looks like for people looking to get an exemption will only get it if they go for a bike from that list (if you can manage to even find one)

There is a thread somewhere on here with the bike list attatched to if for anyone wanting to look at it.

Lucky i didnt go ahead and buy a bike coz i would be stuck now... but think i might just go ahead anyway...

Here's a recent thread on this subject:
A copy of "the list" was posted on it here

The list in question appears to be a list of bikes that complies with the 150 kW/tonne limit in the new licensing scheme described here
The new licensing scheme hasn't come into force yet, and it may be years away, but it seems that it's being used as a basis for decisions about exemptions.

Doubtless bikes will be added to the list from time to time. Can anyone give a link for the current, authoritative version of the list?

Should there be a sticky thread about this somewhere?

Pretty poor, isn't it? They've effectively changed the rules, they didn't bother to tell anyone in advance and even now, they're not going out of their way to tell you what the new rules are.

I think they might use an "excuse" like that, when the real reason is something different. Obviously I don't KNOW this - its just a hunch.

I don't think that is reason for others to give up, UNLESS they really have changed the rules - I don't know that for sure either.

I think that is one of the things you have to actually do to get this exemption. With my exemption this was the case. They even called me up and wanted a pic of my and the bike emailed to them RIGHT NOW (fucked if I know why - they already had lots) probably because they wanted to see if I had the bike in my posession, which I did.

Yeah thats what I would do. Some members here will scream blue murder but fuck them - just go do it and keep quiet. You will have to dodge the fuzz for a while, but hey! thats half of the fun! Better get you a radar detector too..

I just applied for a GDLS exemption to sit my full (I just passed my restricted.) I have done about 16,000km and I'm an old cunt, and a commercial driver, so I expect they will give it to me. We shall see.

Not altogether surprising the ER6N isn't on the list - it's got a low seat height at 785. An acquaintance of mine had an ER6N which suited her height perfectly - I'm 5ft4 and she's shorter than me.

I would guess the main reason for applying for a cc rating exemption is because of height so the bike probably doesn't stack up with the agrument.

Man there is some old bikes on that list!!!!!

Most of those old Suzukis will be dead or well crashed by now

    Lots of lovely Hondas.

There is no reason tall people cannot ride 250's - just Pamela Anderson the seat and pop down to your local Harley dealer for some 30 inch apehangers.

No its not - as per usual Mr Bastard is giving Dangerous advise.

You DO NOT need to own the bike. Once they have agreed that you should have an exemption they will even give you a 'free pass' (in my case for up-to 800cc) to test ride as many bikes as you like. (normally valid for one or two days only) - they were even so kind to fax the dealers a copy when I left it at home duh!

Then once you have found one you like - tell them the rego number and they will send you your paperwork for that bike.

Buying the bike before you get the exemption is asking for disappointment - don't do it.

You note that DB says Yeah! thats what I would do - but he didnt.

What he is recommending is that you ride a bike that you are unlicenced for, and run the risk of being uninsured in - risking a HUGE $$$$ impact should you happen to hit a BMW or the like.

Unless you can afford to suck up that kind of financial penalty - dont do it - get a bike that fits the bill and do your time.

Riding legal will be all that much sweeter when it comes (as opposed to having to swallow the bitter bill of being in debt for years paying off an Insurance company).

DB - one day Ill piss myself laughing if some kid ends up damaging your bike (and cannot afford to pay) and is uninsured because of your advise.

You would be the first to cry and moan - So unless you think that would be OK - please stop recommending it to new / young riders - its irresponsible - and as a old cunt (your words) you should know better.

Yeah you would too, wouldn't you - thats very nasty of you. If something of yours was damaged I wouldn't take such glee in it.

Why take every possible opportunity to belittle someone because they have a different opinion to you? KB is for everyones' opinions, not just ones compatible with yours.

Well i got the list they sent me was the same as the one was listed on here. They dont seem to be too keen on giving it out, i wasnt given one until my application was declined.

As for the ER6N not being alright because of its low seat height I took the photos on it and it is suitable for my height comapred to a cramped 250.

I cant remember who it was here but he applied for the very simialr ER6F and got declined for the same thing, so this isnt an isolated case.

A bit of a heads up before this would of been nice from LTNZ, its pretty average performance by them. I know some one who was granted an exemption for an R1 on their learners earlier this year and now i get told no on a 650cc.. doesnt seem right

Thanks for the thread, am following with these with interest as my partner is looking, but not yet decided to take up riding.

Sounds like there is defiantly an approved list, it would seem dealers have not been informed either, one I know has actually taken to ringing the MTA, and LTNZ, to enquire and been told that this does not exist yet.
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.
