no, thank the lord, you were off to auckland or something to take photos, never mind, will see you at danseys...
Yes - one awesome trip in many respects - the road was being graded so it consisted of deep powder, boulders, and where creeks were breached, mud - legs dangling down many times for balance and the odd bit of duck paddling - windy as fuck - gravel being lifted up off the road and huge towering dust clouds - my staff went in by fixed wing and both them and the pilot regretted it - several attempts to climb out of Branches - thwarted by winds from three different directions.
However - great fun and knackered afterwards - gotta do it again soon - got a bed at the station and a lot of riding about to catch up on.

I have been thinking about another themed adventure ride after the success of our Sth Island Passes ride of 2 years ago. Nighthawk suggested a tour of all the dams some time ago and while I thought trying to do all the dams in the Sth Island might be a bit much, it occurs to me that getting round all the Otago ones over 2-3 days could be a lot of fun.
My definition of dams will be significant sized power or irrigation (or both) dams.
Without doing any serious research yet the ones I came up with were the Waipori Gorge and Lake Mahingerangi, Dunstan trail with the Loganburn, Lake Onslow, Poolburn and down to the Idaburn and Manorburn dams. (I;m sure theres another irrigation scheme on the other side of the Maniototo which probably has storage dams up some goat track as well - Jantar??? local knowledge needed)
Then of course theres the big obvious ones like Roxburgh. Clyde - do we count the outfall of Lake Hawea?
Would we include the Waitaki Valley dams - are they Otago or Canterbury? - if we included them then an alternative route for any tarbabies could run at the same time.
I was really hoping there would be a dam on the Nevis road - please someone tell me there is !!!!
There is another one ,Frasers Dam in behind Alexandra
Firstly does this idea have any appeal?? It feels like a mid-late Jan ride to me but other suggestions welcome
Secondly what other dams are out there with reasonable access for big adventure bikes??
Cheers

The Waitaki is the border for a very small distance from the sea -> inland (25 - 30 kms). The border then takes a sharp turn south.
In fact the summit of Danseys pass and the Lindis pass are both in Canterbury.
As the crow flies Naseby is less than 10 kms from the Canterbury border.
Hi Guys looking back a bit I see Paulj was talking about heading up the Ahuriri and turning west towards Hawea.
Has any one done the total trip over that way in the last couple of months ?
I'm looking at taking a group over mainley on large adventure bikes .
Any Thoughts ???
Cheers
