OK so while MarkS is off up norf picking up his new bike, is there anyone else who still definitely wants to do Odlins Rd tomorrow?

I haven't done this one before, so does anyone know where to head from the summit of the Akatarawa Rd as Odlins Rd is not on my maps? (Is it the 4wd track heading off north from the summit, ie on the LHS of the road if coming up from Waikanae; or is it the track that runs out the back of the summit car park, or somewhere else?)

I'd actually come up from the Upper Hutt side on the Akatarawa Rd, so we could do a 10.30 meet at the summit if anyone is interested from the Kapiti side, and from the Upper Hutt side we could leave the Rimutaka Caltex at 10am.
    Cheers, Dave

    Hey Dave

I won't be doing it until I've got my spokes fixed ( next week )

It is North from the summit.
You'll see a steep rock bank on the opposite side of the road to the car park.
Ride up that and you're in.

I wouldn't recommend doing that ride alone (esp if you intend going to the hut)
Its steep in places, rocky and has some big drops.

Thx Jim, had scouted both of the two I mentioned on a prior ride up to the summit and guessed it was probably that one, but appreciate you confirming for me/us.

So do you reckon its dodgy to go alone even on my little KLX?

Lookin forward to you getting your spokes fixed so we can get you out with us all again and to chattin with you about your experience on the Yamaha Safari too!
    Cheers, Dave

    Only from a,
it's a bit more remote, less well travelled and theres no cell coverage kind of dodgy.
(and on a GS quite tricky in places and undie filling in others )

thats 5 dodgy points for a GS, but probably only 3 for a KLX

Went for a little cruisey ride today - decided Odlins Rd on my own was maybe not a smart idea based on Balrog's advice and the rockiness of the start of the track I had seen on a previous jaunt - but headed up Akatarawa Rd from Upper Hutt anyway on a loop to go down to Waikanae and back over Paekakariki Hill, over the Haywards and home.

Stopped at the Akatarawa Summit for a break. There was a policeman there who warned me to hold onto the bike as a helicopter would be landing shortly! It was the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and it DID damn near blow the poor little KLX over!

Decided it was an omen and any lingering thoughts of a sneaky little solo ride up Odlins Rd went out the window!

It looks like fine weather for all of Waitangi weekend. Is anyone interested in a ride, suggestions?

Had been thinking the same thing, a leisurely stroll up the Rimutaka Pylon access track, or out to Sutherlands Hut, or maybe even both?

I'm spending Friday finishing the mods on my new black toy.

I was intending to go up to Shannon on Saturday (with my son on 'ol greenie' to run it in) to explore up around the dam and drink lots of lattes at the horsemans cafe.

when were you guys thinking of doing something?
