Look after yourself, your immediate ride mates then anyone else as much as you can given that we are all on indiviudual machines and in different places on the road.

it is unfortunately exactly what makes our roads the worst in the western world in my humble opinion.
All we(those of us who give a damn_ can do is ride/drive safe and literally tell the jerk we see giving us all a bad name what we think of em and hopefully they'll get the message that it's not "their road"

So what a couple of you are saying is that it is everyman for himself, fair enough. But how do you defend yourself against the type of idjut that passed my wife or aimed at Insanity.
We all rant about the standard of car drivers but the standard of bike riding is no better it is mostly simply done at higher speeds with more catastrophic results. If the average car driver is a moron, why when he swaps his car keys for his bike keys does he think he has become the undiscovered V Rossi .
Who is safer the driver/rider of moderate ability who is competent & safe or
the supposedly highly skilled rider who believes the road rules are not applicable to him,statistics tend to suggest the latter is the real problem

Your original post, did envoke a little rant when i first read it, sure the bourbon had me type a bloody novel, it may even be a little guilt that had me write that !
Heidi and i rode for 6 months with her on her learners, during which time she even began to prefer to pillion more and more, she said she felt her lil scorpio held the group we rode with up ! (Due to me playing TEC protecting her rear more likely the case, she felt i was missing out) Missing out ? Haha didn't worry me too much, as i was beginning to tire of being the loose riders "we" had become and was happy to let the front guys do their thing, carving up the highways ! The threat to her from behind was aways on my mind to be sure, but I got to the point where i stripped my bike of road gear and only use it for the track now !!
But still i believe that everyone is a potential threat out on our roads ! You very seldom see any sort of curtousy out there and its a "me first" attitude where ppl (car drivers) even get uptight at lights or intersections when you filter past !
In your case it was some dude who perhaps gets his kicks out of, showing off, or even frightening others, or just a fuck off out of my way sort of rider and that sucks (put him in an SUV and he wll probably try and squeeze a learner filtering past him, at an intersection)
There is no way i would come up behind (what was obviously) a couple, out enjoying a sedate cruise and carve them up the way he did, so i feel for ya and yr wife (thats a total put off) !
I'm pleased your wife experienced it, without any inccident or (i hope) undue fear of riding from it ! She may now see and recognise a threat coming from behind and move aside to let them through (but that only lets him pass closely on her right aye)
Hence my comment about riding block for Heidi when we're out there ! NZ roads a full of impatient ppl and if you ride at or just below the limit you will have irate drivers/riders come up behind and tailgate you wanting to get past as quick as possible !!
When i'm alone (or have H as pillion) my pace is just that little more than the flow of traffic (ok sometimes quite a bit more), but of course she will not ride beyond the speed limit and i will admit that makes me nervous, because i then need to be more aware of whats coming from behind ! She often waves me on ahead of her so she can follow, but i always seem to drop back behind her ! You might say i need to let her ride her own ride, but hey i do, but cant help wanting to put a sheild around her !
How do you defend yourself and your wife against idjuts aimed at insanity ? You cant ! You can only be aware that it's happening !
Sure if anyone closes on us from behind i close the gap tween her and i (her in the left wheel track and me in between the two wheel tracks or as close to that scenario as her position on the road allows) and force them to do so on my shoulder not hers (if they're gonna carve past) !

I was out on a ride out Warkworth way and I was stuck behind a guy on an old GSX-R 1100 who was quite a nana...I eventually got frustrated so sped up as much as I could on my Hyosung and overtook him coming up to a corner.....the corner came a lot bloody faster than I expected and so I ended up going around the corner on the wrong side of the road while still passing him, dipping the bike in and trying to slow down using the front brake as well...

Fortunately I made it around and there was no one coming in the other direction but that was a really f&$%ing stupid passing manouever....It almost certainly would have been curtains for me if someone had been coming the other way. I certainly learned my lesson!!!!!

Having waded my way thru 'War & Peace' volumes 1 & 2 I'll make a couple of comments. Mostly I agree with your second post. The wife is on her restricted [ no L plate ] she is competent, careful but of modest ability,she sticks pretty much to the speed limit & rides within her comfort zone. She does use her mirrors to check for vehicles behind but in this case we had just come out of a series of bends & hills which would probably have stopped her seeing a bike coming up rapidly from behind. As I ride ahead I am constantly checking my mirrors to make sure she is OK . I never saw this guy coming either , not because we weren't looking but because he was catching up bloody quick while obscured from us. She was on the right of the lane as per advice from her RRRS course & staggered from me , both techniques that might be criticised but that is for another time.
My wife prefers me to ride ahead, the way I look at it we are going forwards , if I am ahead I can identify potential hazards, I can't put up a shield , I just have to get her skill level up as quick as I can .
I also have slowed down to ride with my wife, I have even got to enjoy the scenery.We are not that far apart, just doing it differently
The post was really directed at some of the worst type of riders out there who need to grow up.







Sinful, this is Trustme's wife I have learnt a lot from this experience and others I have had on the road. I have always let cars pass if they seem impatient, and pull over to the left if I can. I realise its a game of wits out there on the road and you have to be very aware all the time for your own safety on the motorbike. Motorbikes and cars are controlled by people with their own personalities which transfer onto their machines, which shows in their riding. Therefore you will always have a mixture of different ways of driving on the roads, this was another lesson about always being on guard.

Eyeballed a biker last week (though he didn't take us out)...he crossed the double yellows to pass a car or three and um.....''dude!!! can you not see me''??.... he got the fingers from both Anne and myself, fairly close to his helmet I might add, damn theres so dumb fucks out there for sure.

Similar thing happened to me yesterday. I was up SH16 going through the twisties just before Wellsford. I had the Harley tapped out with pegs scrapping and this idiot comes up behind me and sits right on my tail. Then, on the most dangerously blind and tight corner, this fool rips past me! There is no shame in admitting you were a numbskull. Perhaps my confession shall encourage others with similar numbskull tendencies to not attempt to pass other bikes on blind corners.... or risk becoming someones hood ornament.....
