No one has come up will a reason yet. (that I have read)
There must be something to do with the oil or the heat of the oil to make it thin enough to slosh around to cause the problem.

We have never had a problem with either of our bikes.

Can't say that I have either but I'm the first to get paranoid so really should keep off the technical websites...

I live up a bloody steep hill and haven't seen the oil light come on (don't do hard starts either). I over-fill a little as, again because the tech websites said so, the full marker on the V11 is actually a little lower than it should be.

Over filling is not good either.
You can pressurize the sump, blow seals or spit oil out the breather tube and that could end up on your rear wheel.

I would just fill to the recommended mark.

Yes, I have blown the crankcase seal before, luckily it was spotted as I pulled up to a bike shop.
$600 later.....was away again....but could have been a lot worse.
It is a weakpoint on the V11's.

WTF you on about JJ... 1st I ever heard of it, nothing on the V11 forums either... which seal this ya on about?

Apparently it's around the 2002 models black motors.
When the black crackle paint was applied the crankcase at the factory, the so-called factory workers never properly cleaned off the paint overruns onto the mating surfaces and put the gaskets straight on.
From memory it was at the front cover.
A wee while later, the gasket blows and bye-bye oil.

Anyway here's a link that may partially explain. I got told this by a Guzzi dealer.

I was a problem that could happen to the older Guzzi's and at the end of the day the motor is basically the same.
The main reason they put the sump spacer in was not for more oil but to get more of a air gap in to the sump to help stop pressurizing the sump.

The pressure in the sump is pressurized to the point the sump gasket or a oil seal can not take the pressure any more and it pops out.
A bit like blowing up a balloon until it pop's.

thought I'd add to your store of pictures - first one is my Cali just after I picked it up in 1994, the second is how it looks today - I'm waiting on my re-chromed forks coming back!

I'm not sure that this has worked! I've tried attaching a couple of files but where the second one has gone I've no idea! sussed it - my file was too big!

Nice bike. I could go for a Cali too. Looked at a few at the pub at the weekend. Nice bikes. Can't think why I've never really noticed them before.

When I bought the Cali, I had actually gone to look at a Nevada, because the Nevada fitted my "technical" requirements - 750cc plus, shaft drive, luggage, windscreen - but when I sat on one it just didn't grab me at all - the Cali was an extra £2000, so I tried everthing else in the shop before I sat on it - and when I did, that was it! off down to the bank manager for some extra cash.
I've now done 50,000miles on it and I still like the feel of it. The first real trip a couple of months after I got it was UK to Poland and return - 1000 miles each way.
Would love to have it out in NZ, though.

Bought my Guzzi in the Isle of Man and shipped it back when I returned to NZ. The roads here really are great for a Guzzi (well, for any bike really).

See you're in Derby. Got family working at Rolls Royce there (all got their fingers crossed at the moment because of job loss fears).

Take it easy. Hope you get it out to NZ at some point.

got my forks back today - should be back on the road in a couple of days (after I fix the washing machine which broke this morning!)
Question about importing bike - my brake discs are now right on the wear limit - I note that some people mention discs being measured - how do they know just what is the dimension?
I'm going to get some new discs, but at £100 each, it'll be one a month!
