Joined up with XKNuts and OutbakAl , plus picked up Scumdog on the way through Balclutha for the ride down to the British Bike day - then came back through West Otago and Lawrence and decided to stop for a coffee only to find the Dunedin KB rabble had taken over the garden!!! Great to catch up guys and to meet a couple of new faces.
Outback Al has turned into a bit of a cop magnet though - the first one pulled out and followed us from halfway down the new motorway through to about Allanton - by that stage XKNuts and I had left him behind. XK because he didn't realize we were being followed, and me because I trusted my speedo enough to pass Al and then take a few opportunities to extend the gap.
Poor Al came through Waihola and the cop we had seen on the roadside at the far end of town decides to turn round and follow him to somewhere near Milton - makes me wonder though Al, you were only a couple of minutes behind us to Scummies place - you must have given that right hand some serious work after Milton!!!
This does raise another question though - how fast are you going when your speedo says 100kph ?? There seems to be a lot of variation between bikes. I know one mate I rode beside was indicating 120kph on his and mine said 110kph. Al's bike said 102 and I thought he was only doing about 96 - so I passed him. Without getting a GPS to watch I don't know if mine is right or wrong (although I am pretty sure its close to right after that first mate checked his against a GPS and found it was over by about 7%)

I go by my GPS... and @ 100kph my speed is reading 108ish
Most speedos are out... but start worrying when they are out the other way...![]()
i would be keen to know how fast im going when the speedo reads 120........mph that is![]()
Mine was the same, I put a corrected face plate on my speedo (from the states)
Passed a mufti (Camry) on the way back from the coast, he was in the middle of about six cars. He must've been half asleep as he didn't flick his radar on till I pulled back in, he eventually got passed the cars and caught up, followed for a while with the radar on then the disco lights came on
Got a lecture about passing etc
Just as well he didn't get a lock or I would've been walking![]()
Parked @ the Southern Hotel, Outbakal & I were waiting for Ruralman & Princess Fiona thinkin we should not have worn our merino layers, it was hot & we were steamin! But once we got movin it was all good.
Oblivious to the "Traffic Cop" dramas behind me I pressed on, the Hurricane was comfortable @ 70mph but the weather got damn cold & I was pleased I was reasonable well wrapped. I knew my speedo was correct coz Xaria had previously lent me her GPS and it all checked out correct.
Called in @ Chez Scum to collect the "Fringed Wonder", we were late and were politely told so!
I was pissed I had forgotten my camera, & believe it or not none of us had brought one,
A rarity amongst the show was a "Hesketh" vee twin, approx 1985, of Lord Hesketh fame.
Al & I stopped in Gore on the return to look at the Southland Steam & Traction Engine working display. Well worth being sidetracked.
It was now very hot again, leathers / merino and hot sun dont mix!
Lets hit the road, sun on our backs, a bit of heavy throttle, lovely day!
