I think he meant that most bikes since the Crimean war have had the steering lock in the ignition lock assembly.

Generally waaaaay too far advanced. Sends the piston down before tdc...hence running backwards. And yes...it was priceless!

erm. . .No. Retarded. Advanced means that the ignition happens a long way Before TDC in correct rotation. If you retard it it happens closer & closer to TDC. Once you get there the engine will run both ways.

That happened to a mate in the late 60's on a Jawa 350 . It idled so slow, somehow it fired and ran backwards ? Handful of revs for the racey start , and ....... would've been perfect for funniest home vids ! G.
