I think a bigger part of it is cleaning with Kerosene.
Old toothbrush, bit of kero, a rag and a good scrub.
The stuff coming off is pretty black to start with.
Do you take the chain off and scrub it all, or just feed through the next couple feet with it on the sprockets?
Some people just can't seem to comprehend that they do not have the right to be unoffended in their lives.

First question you need to ask yourself for oil is how much do you need?

    10 L or 20 L?

I bought 1L of oil in the normal bottle from the shop, finished it off, asked if they could refill it from their big drum.

Still buying from them, cheaper for me, and none of the bottles to dispose of...

They are 55 "US Gal" Drums....a US Gal is approx 3.9 ltrs

Ours are 44 "Imperial" Gal Drums..aprox 4.54 ltrs

Both are AKA 209 ltr drums.

Chain lubing...some stuff is better than other stuff. I use Auto trans fluid, but carry can of spray oil on bike (Motul is good and comes in small can)

It is more important to oil the chain frequently, than what you use.

If you lube at every refuel..the cheapest lube will do ya. If you buy the very best and only use it once a year the chain/sprokets will wear out anyway!

I have a gadget called a "Kettenmax" that cleans chains, but a stiff brush will do...clean the chain with a mix of kero and ATF to get built up dust n crap off it.

    Bulk oil in NZ

    http://www.motul.co.nz/main.html

Those "generic" oils, like bar oil, ATF, or Molybdenum disulphide, brand is not important. I'd do the "Supercheap" thing.

When you price oil, it is cheaper (relatively speaking) in larger containers.

If 6 of you put in for a 60ltr drum, you get 10ltrs ea and save big!

    Its Amway all over again!

    Loobman chain oiler

Get a Loobman chain oiler. Much cheaper than a Scott Oiler and it works a treat. You can use motor oil, gear oil or chain oil.

I previously used a spray can for the chain but Loobman is better as the chain stays cleaner, the lubricant is applied much more frequently, and it is way easier to use than spraying.

Nice - that is at least half price, but where do you order it from?

TOTO - thanks for starting this thread. Oil seems overpriced to me. A mate told me to get my empty container from the bulk supply at our local bike shop but it turned out to be the same price as from a 4 or 5 L container!
