I managed to shift gears a few times and could still push the bike but the piston still did not go up and down. Then it all jambed then it got free again. We never tried the starter button but even if we did I dont think it would have turned over... bent crank etc.
Removed clutch cover, fished out piece of gear then took it all to mechanic which is where it still is.
Happened on the Dusty Butt ride in the middle of the Rainbow.
That has all been said before in Nordies gearbox thread.... what ever that was called.
so does this mean you are facing a repair bill that exceeds the bike value?

mybe the east coast dosnt like the DR very much,

barts bike lost its gearbox oil.
paladin punched a hole in his sump.
    JMJ motor gave up.

wait on bad things happen in 3s
That place is cursed, but after seeing the photos from today, I'm willing to take a trailer load of spares to get in there and have a look around.

    No, not quite.
If you are thinking of the insurance write off thing it would not work as my cover is for crashes and theft, not engine failure. I checked when that was first mentioned in another thread because claiming insurance on engine wear didn't sound right to me.

Bloody sorry to hear it mate, hope it is repairable and you get back on the horse ASAP.
There are two kinds of adventurers: those who go truly hoping to find adventure and those who go secretly hoping they won't. We should come home from our adventures having faced their perils and uncertainties, endured their discomfort and beaten the odds, with a sly acknowledgment and revitalised solidarity of character.

    Piston ID

I think Woodman is closest - found it on a farm so assume it's out of an old Lanz Bulldog tractor or similair.

From what you,ve said I would be first checking anything to do with compression.

Is the spark plug still in/tight (unlikely that it has come out - But legend has it that it has happened in the past)

Also check the plug for tell tale bits of piston stuck to it from preignition/overheating etc.

Next I would remove the rocker cover and check the valve clearances.

    Check decompression set up etc.

If this turned nothing up then the head would come off for further inspection.

    hope it's nothing serious mate.

Have you pulled the plug to shine a torch down there?

if a valve has gone or the piston has melted you might see it.
