My son (big lad to) found my VTR1000 OK on the back and its good for a bit of a hoon as well if your in that 6-10k price bracket.
But if you have a little more money, my mate has had 3 VFR800's now, and all of them have pushed along bloody well when the riding ventured into the sport arena! I'm like you though Boob, it looks a little to touring for my tastes even though it handles bloody well. Quite an underrated bike!
My choice now (if I hadn't bought a new MX bike instead) would be a Daytona 675 but I still have the old Z1R for our 2 up trips. The old style slab seat bikes are still the most 2 up friendly! They sit right behind you and go more wifely speeds. Haha problem solved get a classic as well as yours!!
If I was not so selfish and genuinelly bought a bike for the best 2up The VFR800 would head my list then Bandit (with fairings model), speed triple, Ducati monster, Vmax maybe? Busa might be in there if it wasn't for the droopy melting off the front, headlight look they have, bloody ugly, but each to their own!
Just a few thoughts!
On a Motorcycle you're penetrating distance, right along with the machine!! In a car you're just a spectator, the windshields like a TV!!
'Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out! Shouting, ' Holy sh!t... What a Ride!! '
Ah, yes, another one of those threads where everyone recommends their own bike.
But, yes. Make sure you test-ride a GSX1400 before making your decision, eh?
I do respect a man with good taste in motorcycles.
Edit: I know you said you didn't want to spend too much money, etc, but do test-ride a Multistrada as well.

I have been thinking about what I might (one day) replace my CB with. I want something a bit more sporty, but not too sporty, still comfortable for LONG rides, like you pillion accommodation is also a high priority. Ideally less than 5 years old, less than 20,000km (which is only a years riding for some of us).
So far my Test ride list has on it (in no particular order):
Aprillia Futura
Triumph Sprint
Ducati St (2,3 or 4)
VFR800
Blackbird.
I took a firestorm for a ride and the wind coming off the screen hit just in the wrong place on my head setting up a real whistle in my helmet. Lifting or dropping my head an inch or so made a huge difference, but I couldn't ride like that for long, though a double bubble screen might solve that. Aside from the whistle and looking for a gas station every 150km or so I thought it was great.

Is that an offer to test ride?
Ill be in Wanganui tomorrow too, lookin at a bike for the old man
No sir, I have not but will take it into consideration
Would take a bit to go back to an RF900, not that I didn't like it of course but more it's something I have already had. Plus it's unlikely i'd repeat the same deal I got the last time
GSX1400 is more than my budget at present although is something I would highly likely enjoy, love the shape/style
Yep for sure but again a lil over the top budget wise at present
Ewwwww
VTR thou is where bikes go to DIE!!! Cannot stand them, they represent the absolute budget end of large capacity V twins in almost every aspect.
Sorry if my rather strong opinion of them offends present or past owners.
Actually I take that back, suffer in ya jocks![]()
Now if my memory serves me correctly Mr Random, you have no use for your's at present, this would mean I could be doing you a favour by test riding.
Now I know what you're going to say & yes it's true, I am a saint bordering on holyness but hey, someone has to do the dirty work![]()

A. I got my licence back on Tuesday. So. Muahahaha!
B. She was serving perfectly well as a Clubmans racer in the interim, too. Although the power-to-weight disadvantage against Sinfull's 955 was really starting to show (the lap time differences had nothing to do with our respective riding abilities, I'm sure).
I always insure my bikes for any licenced rider, so you're quite welcome to 'ave a go any time we're in the same part of the countryside.
Stickchick and I will be pootling down to Wellywood for Queen's Birthday weekend, so I could always pop by your way and do a bit of a bike-swap loop while the ladies sit at home with cups of tea.
Also, Mully's shameless arse-kissing (see above) has resulted in him leaving me with his RF and getting the 1400's key for the day today, so you might want to check the ride review which I assume he'll post later.

I usually chip in with the buy the bike I ride threads and lay plaudits upon the mighty GSX1400. On this occasion though, whilst it is blisteringly quick and has certainly got the pillion side covered, I think your after something a bit lighter and more agile.
Frankly mate any thing sporty that will take two up well is bound to be a bit lardier, so I guess I'd have to pin my flag to the Blackbird, other than that I'm stumped, Very interested in what you end up with.
Why bother posting a reply if I ain't sure myself?? Why to congratulate you on your choice of bride of course, what a stunner, if she's a sample of your ability to choose wisely, I think you'll get the right bike for you, Blardy well done my man.![]()
Oh bugger
Hmm. Random googling teaches me something every day.
