Why is Auckland City Council being nice to bikers?

Auckland City Council has just spent a heap of cash advertising the fact that motorbikes can be parked free in their carparks. I have seen several large billboards as well as a few bus shelters with this message, but why???

Firstly, doesn't every biker know this already? Prehaps not I guess.

Secondly, its not exactly a revenue stream seeings as its free.

Thirdly, is it an effort to get car drivers to bring there bikes to work with the incentive of free parking. If so then it may well encourage non bikers to buy bikes and save lots of money whilst taking cars off the roads. And if thats true, then ACC would be pro-biking and anyone who has riden around Auckland will know thats a crock of shit just by looking at the state of the roads.

Whats going on? Why are they being nice to bikers? I smell a rat, and its not 'squeaker'....

    Being nice my arse.

Slapped a ticket on my bike for not paying and DISPLAYING.

Where do the pig ignorant motherbotherers think that a bike could safely dislpay a parking ticket with out some scumbag ripping it off and placing it on the dash of their cage.

Nothing wrong with Auckland roads. And ACC are prettyy biker friendly.

But, why on earth would you prak a bike somewhere you needed to display a ticket? You don't need one in the car parks, and footpaths are free.

I dunno about auckland, but down in hamilton the free parking in the council-building carpark is actully a "bike parking area" ..if you park in a cars spot, then you`ll problery get a ticket for not paying. Or maybe you were in the right spot and the ticket person didnt relise bikes could park there free. However i dont recomend parking on the footpath, that is a ticketable offence for sure.

Maybe they're getting cars off the road so it will be a little longer before they have to spend billions more building yet bigger roads. Perhaps they are just attempting to postpone the inevitable.

In Wellington you are allowed to as long as you don't obstruct, but it's up to the parking warden whether you are obstructing.

I agree with that, where the hell did u park man, either park on the footpath out of the way or a bike park. Never had any problems with parking in Akld city. Only place that did try and charge me was the airport.

Also come on people we all know we have to treat every cage driver as 'special' and blind and make judgement calls accordingly...isn't that part of the fun of being on a bike.

they just want us to visit the city more and take advantage of the free parking by buying a coffee, seeing a movie, buying a book in Auckland city, bringing in more revenue ..
meh Dai you gotta case there throw it away i say , "oh officer must have been the same person take my ticket as they took my pay and display aswell."

Dick recently traded in his BMW R1150RT for an R1200RT (the old bike is currently for sale at Experience). He rides from Auckland down to Queenstown for the summer, spends a couple of weeks riding in the South Island and then rides back to Auckland.

I expect that they're trying to cut down the number of cars coming into the city each day.

Every motorcycle is one less cage on the (crowded) roads.

In a rare turn of events I am now in a position to answer my own inane questions; and thus enlighten you 'orrible lot in the process

From the horses mouth as it where, the reason ACC is promoting the motorbikes park free deal is this.

"Bikes aren't heavy enough to trip the automatic paybooth barrier and ticket dispensers, this causes hold ups and blockages and requires a member of staff manually letting us through, which is a bit of an inconvience".

I have paraphrased a bit, but thats the gist of it!!

We get to park free 'cus the staff are too lazy to get off their arses, oh well it works for me, although squeezing past some of those barriers can be a bit of a mission, apperently we shouldn't take a ticket to get in either...hohum
