    Who put this here?

    Hello,

I am trying without much effort to determine what this thing is circled in red. I have unscrewed all obvious bolts and yet still can't take it off. What could be holding it on? Should I be taking this off anyway? Will heaps of slime and fish heads fall out when I do?

I want to take it off to sand it down and paint it. It is scratched and chipped. Bike is a ZXR 250C.

    Thanks.

I most definitely thought about reading a manual. I read the user manual which was obviously no good, and I'm getting the service one. When my dial-up finally gets it you'll be the first to know. Manuals may not tell me if when I take it off, a vast amount of liquid will pour out. They also may not tell me how to successfully take it off either.

It is much faster to just ask and see if these specific questions can be answered by someone. Manuals don't tell the whole story. Thank you for your push for world manual domination all the same.

That would be your alternator cover, much slime in the form of engine oil will fall out. Just drain your oil and pull it off.. thay can be a little difficult to remove as the magnets in the stator are quite strong. A good tug should do the trick. Try and avoid using anything to prise it off (screw drivers etc) as you could easily damage the gasket surfaces. You will pobably need a new gasket.

Thanks Ducman, that's what I wanted to know. Will leave it on there and clean/sand it where it is.

Looks like a stator cover, the magnets will be holding it on. Lever it off evenly, just lean the bike to the right so no oil wants to make it way out. Try not to root the gasket... I would be inclined to check the price and availability on a new one, just in case. Pretty much, what Ducman said

But definitely take it off to clean and paint it, you'll be able to get a heaps better finish, as it'll be much easier to prepare perfectly. You might want to try a small wirebrush in a drill/dremel, should come up pretty mint

Stators don't run in oil I am fairly certain!?

The ones I have removed have not had any connection through to the main oil galleries.

Not 100% sure what that covers, but I replaced mine when I binned the ZXR cause it was all scratched up and stuff... if you take it off you'll need to replace the gasget (about $15 from your local bike shop). Also make sure that when you put it back on... you follow the manual in regards to which bolt to do first (there is a order in which its done...)
I'm not a complete idiot... some pieces are missing

Looks like the stator cover, just be carefull when you lever it off that you don't ruin the gasket.

The fact that you're asking says you should probably "leave the fucking thing alone".

But if curiosity gets the better of you, yeah, rip the fucker off. You'll feel much better and your bike will be much faster.
