see your point Chris and it wont work with everyone..but I hope it is a better course generally than having the cops involved..maybe its just naivety or old age...hehehehehhehehe
Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead
Do not walk ahead as I may not follow.
Do not walk beside me as the path is narrow
In fact FU*K off and leave me alone

It's always worth a try. No point in abusing them back. Does get frustrating though, there's been more than one incident of head on's with illegal riders in Woodhill.

Of course not, it's nasty stuff and bloody stupid and I saw on TV1 news that the traps had been made with a nail gun I'm not condoning it, just saying I can see why it's happening.

Despite residents, police and Rayonier's best efforts, there are still dimwits trespassing in the forests and riding in beach areas where they shouldn't. The police have taken a pretty hard line at the beach dishing out hefty fines to people with unregistered bikes and no licences (the beach is legally a road) and that doesn't deter everyone.

    Interesting

Quite interesting discussion on this issue. I see both sides of the story and I did make the point that there has been reports in the past re idiots nearly hitting kids near and on the dunes. Great that the local iwi are restoring the dunes.

Yes, its completely stupid to set the traps but it would seem it would be the rogues whom would cop it, not that I say they deserve too, and theres the risk other people, including the local themselves, may stand on one and suffer a bad injury.

I cant help comparing the situation to the HUGE stink re the Police wanting Driver photo ID for licences some years ago, and of course we have them now, in that if you have nothing to hide(or if you dont go and ride in what you know is a banned area), then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Thanks for all the comments and no its not a good idea to rile up the locals just because of one egghead.

Seems pretty simple then, Parents, keep your kids out of the dunes. Thats dirt bike country. Hell if its legally a road then thats the last place to let your kids play.

    Problem solved.

Yep, I can tell you for a fact that a Yamaha Big Bear can drive over sand so soft, that a Police 4WD gets stuck. Sorry I didnt help buddy, I saw you waving but I had to take ny fish home for tea.

Understand this, road or no road, I'm riding on the beach without paying yet another tax - Im not gonna register my quad. And even though its a glass free area, I take my glass. Yep its an alcohol free zone and I drink down there too.

The PROBLEM is hoons, zapping through the sanddunes, scaring kids and being wankers.

But the HALFWITs in council just ban EVERYTHING without ever addressing the problem

ZILLIONs of families have taken a quad down that beach with a dog, chilly bin, and fishing rod, and had a great day. But now they break a million rules, and the cops race down with a ticket book, the dog ranger wastes a day on double time there, and all that happens is normal joe public gets harrassed and hates the gmint just a bit more.

So... even though it easy to pick on joe public with your rules, why not deal with the problem ?

Give tickets to hoons, speeders, drunks, those who break bottles - don't just spend your day trying to piss ME off !
David must play fair with the other kids, even the idiots.

Be careful hooning on Horowhenua beaches - the locals have gone vigilante

Not that I condone wanton destruction of the fragile seashore ecosystem, but crikey, these guys are going a bit far I reckon ...

And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

Lethal traps set at Horowhenua beach

Spikes have been placed in Horowhenua and Manawatu sand dunes to stop motorbike riders. Four pieces of timber spiked with exposed nails have been found on sand tracks between Hokio Beach and just south of Waitarere Beach were handed over to police before anyone was hurt.

Police say Horowhenua residents upset at motorcyclists riding over the dunes and into private forest may be responsible. "These nailed boards pose the risk of serious injury at the very least," Foxton constable Rob Illingworth said "If a kid lands on one, it would go straight through the foot and if a motorcyclist hits one and goes flying, anything could happen."

    Well Said Dave..

I grew up in the Far Far North and we use to go riding down the beach all the time. Great stuff. Never any hassles. It maybe that I am getting old but Life seemed to be a lot more laid back 20-30 years ago. Then the whole world has changed big time mostly for the worse. Everyone is consumed by the need to own the latest gadget and people work longer and harder in this consumer fvrezy so dont have the time for anyone esle and family so much. So much for the 35 hour week we use to work in the late 70's.

I think the protection of human intelligence is much more important than some fragile eco system.

Perhaps I'll go out with a shot gun and start shooting at boyracers to protect the gene pool? Take matters into my own hands like these obviously responsible citizens have done... In fact maybe I should go shoot them too. It seems they didn't think through far enough and the traps will get all the non bikers too...

I have deep pockets. It's just that it's a deep empty pocket...........

    Mass Meet

The more I dwell on this story the more I am siding with the members whom want to take some sort of action. Maybe a mass gathering at the beach and media exposure to show that it of real concern to all bike riders. That wouldn't be pointing fingers nor upsetting the locals with a noise parade but just to show solidatory(spelling?). And the bikes stay at the parking area.
I just can not understand the mentality of whomever has done this. Do they also shoot needles into the local duck's necks(news last night), and poison cats because they catch native birds????? Hate to say it but maybe it will take a kid getting one through their foot to get some real action taken. Bet the local cops wont want to hassle locals especially if it is iwi, which I doubt somehow.
