    Credit references

I have none... I pay in full when I need something, or I put it on the Visa and pay that off in full every time. I despise HPs and am lucky enough to have avoided the need for them for the last err... long time...

And now I have to open an account to get some gas bottles filled... and they need - credit references...

    WTF?

You should be able to get them from your credit card company.

All they need to do is get your permission to do a credit check. Like myself, I have never used HP's etc. All they need to know is that you don't have a negative history as opposed to no history at all.

Just buy something on no interest HP and pay it straight off, will probably cost you $45 or so on admin fees, but instant credit history

True but you're actually better off running the loan for several months(longer the better) ideally paying a larger monthly payment. That there is the history that other Co.'s are seeking.
100% in only getting interest free HP...

When you say it's a cash account do you mean that at no point in the transaction will credit be extended to you? i.e. cash on delivery or payment in advance for goods? If that's the case then what is the point of an account at all?

If it's trade of some sort usually a bank reference will do to confirm them of your adequate liquidity compared to the credit facility (I'm making the assumption credit is required again otherwise what's the point of an Account?).

There's more than one way to skin a cat so if in doubt ask to speak to the person who defined their credit policy. If you can't get agreement find another supplier who will accomodate you.

I used to be a credit manager in UK but was more dealing with Blue Chip companies so although overall credit principles are similar actual practice differs.

Good thing you have a Credit Card or you wouldn't have a credit rating, therefore no account.

    It's a messed up system.

If you have no credit rating they assume you are a loser with no money, no matter that you turned up on a $40k MVF4SP.

    Edit: Lol. Cash Account. Lol.

I've encountered this. But you do have credit references. What about the phone company? power company? credit card company/bank ? Get the newspaper delivered? City council (rates etc), or landlord.

All of those things are valid credit references. Depending of course on how much credit you are seeking , but in your case it is irrelevant, they just need something to write in the boxes.

Tis resolved now - but to answer your questions...

I'm informed that utility companies don't do credit references. I mean why would they - they're only the most reliable billing a person is ever going to get and yet - they hold a monopolistic position so they can afford to tell people where to go.

    • Credit card and bank - yeah... that came to me late in the peace
    • No newspaper. The web's a wonderful thing.
    • City Council is a good one. I like that. Let them earn my taxes...

If you are getting welding gas bottles filled, use Supagas. THey have always taken a credit card, tested my bottles without complaint, and have service to leave the thieves and morons at BOC and Air Liquide in the dust.

Supagas was actually in receivership just a few months ago. Hmmm very stable company.
